Job summary

Department of Health in South Rand Hospital invites applications for a Paediatric Occupational Therapist. The successful candidate will provide in- and out-patient Paediatric OT services, working within a multidisciplinary team and adhering to evidence‑based protocols.

The position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Therapy, current HPCSA independent practitioner registration, one year of community service plus one year of post‑community service experience, and proficiency in MS Office

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Therapy and HPCSA independent practitioner registration are required.
• One year community service plus one year experience post community service is required.
• Computer literacy in MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams is required.

Responsibilities

• Provide Paediatric Occupational Therapy services to inpatients and outpatients per evidence‑based practice.
• Work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team to ensure coordinated patient care.
• Maintain accurate clinical records, statistics and reports as required by department and legislation.
• Supervise and mentor junior staff; participate in staff development and PMDS as needed.
• Participate in quality assurance and service development initiatives.

Requirements

• A Bachelor’s Degree in occupational therapy. Current registration with HPCSA as an independent practitioner. The candidate must have completed one year community service and must have one year experience post community service. Computer literacy (MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams). The candidate should be a dynamic individual who adapts well to change and should be able to work independently within the multidisciplinary team and under pressure. The candidate should be able to manage the Paediatric Occupational Therapy subsection (inpatient and outpatient) and assist in other subsections as required, as well as supervise and mentor junior staff. Sound knowledge and skills in assessment and treatment using evidence-based practice of various Paediatric for individual and group therapy including conditions such as Neonates, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome and Developmental Delay etc. Competence in selecting and administering a wide range of Paediatric standardised assessments and outcome-based measures. The following will serve as an added advantage: Knowledge of current health and public service legislation, regulation and policies. Sound knowledge of Paediatric clinical theory, practice and ethics relating to the delivery of Occupational Therapy services within a hospital setting. Ability to work in a dynamic environment and to use initiate within the Occupational Therapy Department. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong planning, organisational, problem solving, communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to identify departmental needs as well as monitor, evaluate and coordinate existing services. Ability to engage in solution-focused problem-solving and service development initiatives

Duties

• Provide Paediatric Occupational Therapy services to both in and outpatients in accordance with evidence-based practice and departmental protocols. Candidate should also be skilled in all areas of Occupational Therapy to assist other subsections as required. Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to ensure coordinated patient care. Monitor, develop and co-ordinate Paediatric Occupational Therapy services as required. Maintain accurate clinical records, statistics and reports in accordance with departmental and legislative requirements. Participate in the development of management protocols for improved patient care. Execute all patient and departmental related administrative tasks including data compilation, stock management and submission of required reports. Co-ordinate, supervise and effectively plan relevant education activities and health calendar campaigns. Actively attend and chair relevant meetings as well as take part in hospital activities and committees. Participate in the supervision, mentorship and training of junior staff, community service therapists & students. Participate and contribute towards quality assurance activities as well as active engagement in resource acquiring, management and allocation. Administer Performance Management and Development System (PMDS) and evaluation of junior level staff. Able to act in the position of Chief Occupational Therapist where necessary.
