Job summary

Durban is seeking an Electronic Assistant to install, commission, repair and maintain supervisory and substation security systems and equipment. The role involves SCADA-related maintenance, fault finding, and assisting with commissioning, with a strong emphasis on safety and compliance.

The successful candidate must hold an NTC2/NCV3 in Electrical Engineering or be a Trade Tested Electrician, possess a valid driving license and PrDP, and be able to operate under departmental safety rules.

Qualifications

• Must possess a NTC2 or NCV3 in Electrical Engineering from a FET College, registered with DHET.
• Trade Tested Artisan (Electrician) accredited by the relevant body under DHET.
• Valid motor vehicle driving license and a PrDP or to be obtained within 6 months.
• Valid First Aid certificate or to be obtained within 6 months.
• Competent person per eThekwini safety rules for Electrician fields.
• Pass departmental proficiency test demonstrating knowledge of distribution/ transmission systems.
• Apprentice route requires documented proof of recognised apprenticeship.
• ARPL route requires at least 3 years of relevant practical Electrician experience.

Responsibilities

• Install, commission, repair and maintain all supervisory and substation security systems/equipment.
• Construct, maintain, operate, repair and test SCADA equipment and substation security gear.
• Update system databases and compile substation wiring schedules.
• Troubleshoot faults and malfunctions in systems/equipment.
• Assist with commissioning of substation equipment and supervise apprentices and trainees.
• Submit required paperwork on time and provide specialist technical advice.

Job Purpose:

To install, commission, repair and maintain all supervisory and substation security systems/equipment.

Key Responsibility Areas:

• Responsible for the construction, maintenance, operation, repair and testing SCADA related equipment and substation security equipment in substations.
• Updating various system databases and compiling substation wiring schedules.
• Conducts fault finding, troubleshooting and problem solving for system/equipment operating malfunctions.
• Installing substation security equipment and assists with commissioning of substation equipment.
• Repairs and maintains all equipment under control of the Control Systems Section.
• Updating computerised records relating to system faults and maintenance applications.
• Promotes safety and accident prevention in the work place in accordance with his or her appointment under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (1993).
• Timeously submits relevant paperwork preceding, during and on completion of work.
• Provides specialist technical advice and instructions to new electricians and subordinates; supervise, motivate, train and discipline apprentices, trade workers and other trainees.

Essential Requirements:

• Must be in possession of a NTC2 or NCV3 in Electrical Engineering, from a further Education and Training College, registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training.
• Trade Tested Artisan (Electrician) accredited by the relevant body under the Department of Higher Education and Training.
• Valid motor vehicle driving license.
• Valid Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) or to be obtained within 6 months from date of appointment.
• Valid First Aid certificate or to be obtained within 6 months from date of appointment.
• Must be a competent person in terms of eThekwini Municipality’s safety rules in all Electrician fields, applicable to the relevant branch.
• Must be required to pass a departmental proficiency test, set by the Directorate to prove sufficient and general knowledge of construction, operations and maintenance of distribution (and/ or transmission) systems.
• Apprentice route: Must provide documented proof of having served a recognised apprenticeship prior to undergoing the trade test.
• ARPL route: Must provide documented proof of at least 3 years' relevant practical experience at the level of an Electrician and working under the direct supervision of a competent Electrician, in diverse aspects of construction, operation, and maintenance of distribution and/or transmission networks prior to undergoing the trade test.
• 3 years relevant post trade test experience in the Electricity Supply and Distribution industry.

Special Conditions:

• 40 hours, 5 day work week.
• Standby allowance as authorised.
• Be prepared to work overtime when required to meet the exigencies of the service.
• Subject to transfer/relocation to any of Electricity Unit's depots/divisions as required.
• Protective Clothing: As per the PPE Schedule.

Physical Requirements:

• Must be physically capable of carrying out all the duties of the post.
• Must be physically fit and in good health as determined by the City Medical Officer of Health.
• Must be able to physically lift heavy objects and equipment normally required of a Electrician.
• Must not be colour blind.
• Must be able to climb ladders and work at heights.
• Must have the necessary dexterity to work with tools and instruments
