Job summary

York County Government's Planning and Development Department seeks a full-time Zoning Code Enforcement Officer to enforce land use and nuisance codes. This non-exempt position requires investigation, documentation, court testimony, and the ability to drive to affected properties.

The ideal candidate holds an Associate’s Degree and at least three years of code enforcement or law enforcement experience, plus a valid SC driver’s license.

Job description

The Planning and Development Department is hiring a full-time (40hours weekly), non-exempt Zoning Code Enforcement Officer to join our team. The purpose of this position is to enforce and investigate violations of York County land use and nuisance codes and ordinances; write citations, prepare and maintain documentation, prepare for and testify at court hearings.

Projected Salary Range/Grade 114:

$23.85 - $28.62, salary is determined based on experience and education.

Work Schedule:

Monday – Friday, 8:00 am -5:00 pm

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Responds to citizen complaints of ordinance violations.
  • Works with property owners and other County staff to resolve ordinance violations.
  • Researches the zoning and ownership of each non-compliant property.
  • Performs field investigations, gathers evidence to establish proof of a violation, and prepares notice of violation letters, which requires the ability to drive and operate a vehicle.
  • Assists in preparing documentation and evidence for court cases and testify, as needed, at court proceedings.
  • Enforces the County’s sign and nuisance ordinances, coordinating investigation and determinations with other County departments as necessary.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience:
  • Associate’s Degree.
  • Three (3) years of experience of code or law enforcement experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
  • Valid state driver’s license.

Physical Demands:

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement. Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.
