Job summary

Latin American Youth Center in Washington, DC is seeking a Youth Wellness Specialist to design and lead wellness-focused activities for youth aged 6 to 15. This full-time role collaborates with Rita Bright Family & Youth Center staff to promote healthy lifestyles and engage youth in arts, athletics, and enrichment programs.

The position requires experience with youth programming; ServSafe certification is required to assist with meals.

  • Experience with cooking/nutrition education preferred.
  • Experience with urban gardening is a plus but not required.
  • Wellness themed activities such as gardening, cooking, yoga, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning/leading programming for youth, including arts and athletics.
  • Plan and lead camp activities during Spring Break, Winter Break, and Summer.
  • Plan and lead a wellness driven curriculum for youth ages 6 to 15.
  • Create a safe, inclusive classroom environment with academic support.
  • Oversee afterschool activities including academics and enrichment sessions.
  • Engage volunteers and partners in wellness activities with Rita Bright youth.
  • Lead and chaperone classes during camps and DCPS Fun Days.
  • Support Rita Bright families by connecting them with LAYC and external resources.

Salary Range: $47,000.00 To $52,000.00 Annually

The Youth Wellness Specialist will focus on bringing wellness programming to youth at the Rita Bright Family & Youth Center. They will design wellness focused activities and collaborate with internal and external partners to lead hands-on activities that promote a healthy lifestyle for Rita Bright Family and Youth Center. They will also support other Rita Bright programming, like arts and athletics.

Latin American Youth Center’s (LAYC) mission is to empower youth to achieve a successful transition to adulthood, through comprehensive and innovative programs that address youths’ social, academic, and career needs. To achieve this mission, LAYC provides services and opportunities to approximately 4,000 individuals annually to support academic achievement, promote healthy behavior, and guide youth towards successful adulthood.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist in planning/leading other programming for youth, including art classes and athletics/fitness.
  • Work with Rita Bright staff to plan and lead camp activities during Spring Break, Winter Break, and Summer.
  • Plan and lead a wellness driven curriculum and activities for youth ages 6 to 15. (Rotating Quarterly
  • Create an enriched classroom environment promoting safety, inclusivity, and academic support.
  • Oversee or assist with additional afterschool program activities as assigned. Including academics, various enrichment sessions, athletics, lunch/snack and events.
  • Engage with volunteers and partners and include them in wellness activities with Rita Bright youth.
  • Lead & Chaperone a class group during Spring Break and Summer Camps, as well as DCPS Fun Days
  • Support Rita Bright families by connecting them with LAYC and external resources.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Experience planning and leading activities for youth.
  • Experience with cooking/nutrition education preferred.
  • Experience with urban gardening is a plus but not required.

  • Will be required to obtain a ServSafe license to assist with serving afterschool and camp meals.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Flexible schedule, including occasional evenings for school events.
  • Complete criminal and child abuse/neglect clearances.
  • Flexible, energetic, positive individual with commitment to youth development in a high quality, respectful environment.
  • Ability to work well and communicate with culturally diverse populations.
  • LAYC/MMYC requires the COVID-19 vaccine of all its employees. You will be asked to provide proof of vaccination at the time of your interview and at your onboarding.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This is largely a sedentary position that requires the ability to speak, hear, see, and lift small objects up to 10 lbs. May require the ability to travel locally and/or regionally.
