Job summary

Latin American Youth Center in Riverdale, MD seeks an Academic Advisor to support Next Generation Scholars with the Guaranteed Access Grant, FAFSA, financial aid, and college applications. You will lead life skills and readiness workshops for youth at local schools and coordinate with partners to provide resources.

The role involves case management, data entry, and ongoing outreach to ensure program goals are met with a strong commitment to youth development.

Qualifications

  • Two‑Four+ years of youth development experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance to enrolled participants and families on the Guaranteed Access Grant, FAFSA, financial aid, and college applications.
  • Deliver life skills, financial literacy, and college/career readiness workshops.
  • Maintain attendance, grades, and test scores; refer to resources as needed.
  • Conduct one‑on‑one check‑ins to support Academic & Personal goals and plans.
  • Attend meetings with funders, school administration, and community partners.
  • Document client interactions in ETO and related systems.

Academic Advisor

Full Time Riverdale, MD, US

Salary Range: $50,000.00 To $52,000.00 Annually

The Academic Advisor will support enrolled Next Generation Scholars and their families with the Guaranteed Access Grant application process, FAFSA completion, financial aid, and college applications. The Advisor will also facilitate life skills, financial literacy, college and career readiness workshops, and support after-school and summer programming for 85 youth at High Point High School and Buck Lodge Middle School. Additionally, the Advisor will engage community partners to provide resources and services that support students and families, including financial aid assistance, leadership development, college preparation, community service opportunities, and recreational activities throughout the school year and summer.

Latin American Youth Center's (LAYC) mission is to empower youth to achieve a successful transition to adulthood, through comprehensive and innovative programs that address youths' social, academic, and career needs. To achieve this mission, LAYC provides services and opportunities to approximately 4,000 individuals annually to support academic achievement, promote healthy behavior, and guide youth towards successful adulthood.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide support to enrolled Next Generation Scholars Participants and their families with the Guaranteed Access Grant Application Process
  • Provide Financial Aid, FAFSA, and College Application Readiness Workshops to participants and their families
  • Conducts case management by keeping records of attendance, grades, and standardized test scores, and referrals to resources within and outside of the organization, of youth enrolled in the program
  • Conducts one‑on‑one check‑ins with students to fill out and review Individualized Academic Plans creating Individualized Academic Plans to track Academic & Personal Goals, College and employment plans,
  • Available to attend meetings regarding programming with funders, school administration, and community partners
  • Available to attend outreach school events and community partners events in efforts to meet program enrollment goals
  • Documents, in person client’s file and ETO (Efforts to Outcomes), all contacts with youth, family members, LAYC staff, and representatives from other agencies involved in the provision of client services.
  • Performs other duties and activities assigned by Educational Programs Manager and Program Manager, including community service and outreach events.
  • Administer assessment and enter results into ETO database, Pre & Post Surveys on the topics of Financial Aid, Financial Literacy, and Satisfaction Survey,
  • Enter Weekly ETO Data about Pre and Post Surveys, Grades, attendance, Individualized Academic Plans, College Access Lists, standardized test scores, and referrals to resources within and outside the organization
  • Conduct one‑on‑one and/or group sessions with participants.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Two‑Four plus years of youth development experience
  • A bachelor’s degree is preferred
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent problem solving and organizational skills.
  • Excellent time management and ability to multi‑task and prioritize in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Knowledge of community and local resources.
  • The willingness and desire to work independently, as well as collaboratively, and to take on additional responsibilities.
  • Flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and Saturday for school events and family support
  • A positive attitude and an earnest interest in providing good customer service to our clients.
  • Complete criminal and child abuse/neglect clearances.
  • Flexible, energetic, positive individual with commitment to youth development in a high quality, respectful environment.
  • Ability to work well and communicate with culturally diverse populations.
  • LAYC/MMYC requires the COVID-19 vaccine of all its employees. You will be asked to provide proof of vaccination at the time of your interview and at your onboarding.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This is a sedentary position that requires the ability to speak, hear, see, and lift small objects up to 10 lbs. May require the ability to travel locally and/or regionally.
