Job summary

Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) is seeking a part-time swim instructor to develop and deliver structured learn-to-swim lessons for all ages, from infants to adults, at designated MMSD pools.

You will lead classes of 5–8 participants, sometimes with an assistant, and assess swimmers according to American Red Cross standards. Evening and weekend shifts are available.

Qualifications

• Must be able to teach swim lessons across ages from infants to adults.
• Ability to lead small group classes (5–8 participants) independently.
• Familiarity with American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim curriculum.

Job description

Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) is Madison’s public recreation provider. MSCR offers a wide variety of athletic, recreational, arts and enrichment activities and classes for all ages in an accessible, inclusive setting. Programs include swimming instruction, MSCR on the Move, arts & enrichment classes, youth summer camps, sports camps & clinics, adult & 50+ fitness, adult sport leagues including pickleball, softball and tennis, and a wide variety of outdoor pursuits including paddling sports, pontoon trips, camping, orienteering and challenge courses.

As a department of the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), MSCR also provides afterschool enrichment activities, clubs and sports as well as summer programming in Madison elementary, middle and high schools, Allied Learning Center and Meadowood Neighborhood Center. Afterschool clubs and sports include: arts & enrichment, homework/academic clubs, drama, dance, skiing, soccer, basketball, volleyball, cross country and much more!

Program Description:

MSCR offers swim instruction for all ages (infants through adults) following the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim standards. Programs are held at five MMSD pools during the school year. Depending on the location, swim instructors may teach any of the following: child + adult classes, preschool lessons, youth lessons (grades K-8) and teen/adult lessons. MSCR follows an inclusive programming model providing reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities across all classes.

Job Description & Duties:

• Observe and evaluate swimmers based on Red Cross standards.

Start Date: September 13, 2026 Work Location: East, La Follette, Memorial and West High Schools, Lapham Elementary Hours/week: Up to 18.5 hours per week. Work hours: Evening and weekend hours available. Payrate: 18.00 - 20.00 per hour Minimum Qualifications:

• At least 16 years of age.
• Ability to swim twenty-five yards of all six strokes to a Level 4 standard.
• At least two summer seasons or one full school year of experience as a lead swim instructor.
• Knowledge of American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim curriculum

Preferred Qualifications:

Opportunities to receive Lifeguarding and/or WSI Certification through MSCR.
