Job summary

Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) is seeking Youth Sports Instructors to plan and lead elementary-aged sports classes at MSCR West and across Madison Schools. The role emphasizes skill development, safety, fun, and social growth for kids in a recreational setting.

Hours are 2–18.5 per week, weekday evenings and weekends. Pay ranges $18.00–$23.00 per hour, with start on 9/14/26 and end on 5/27/27, at various Madison locations.

Qualifications

  • Experience with elementary/middle school children.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions with minimal supervision.
  • Effective communication with children, parents, and the public.
  • Experience in youth leadership is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and lead groups of elementary-aged participants in youth sports classes.
  • Teach fundamentals of soccer, basketball, t-ball, volleyball, ultimate frisbee and badminton.
  • Promote skill-building, fitness, fun, and sportsmanship while keeping play safe and engaging.

Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) is Madison’s public recreation provider. MSCR offers a wide variety of athletic, recreational, arts and enrichment activities and classes for all ages in an accessible, inclusive setting. Programs include swimming instruction, MSCR on the Move, arts & enrichment classes, youth summer camps, sports camps & clinics, adult & 50+ fitness, adult sport leagues including pickleball, softball and tennis, and a wide variety of outdoor pursuits including paddling sports, pontoon trips, camping, orienteering and challenge courses.

As a department of the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), MSCR also provides afterschool enrichment activities, clubs and sports as well as summer programming in Madison elementary, middle and high schools, Allied Learning Center and Meadowood Neighborhood Center. Afterschool clubs and sports include: arts & enrichment, homework/academic clubs, drama, dance, skiing, soccer, basketball, volleyball, cross country and much more!

Program Description:

MSCR Youth Sports Leagues provide participants with an experience that emphasizes skill and character development through non-competitive recreational leagues. Our youth leagues and classes promote fun, participation, sportsmanship, and fair play. MSCR offers a variety of sports year-round. All children are welcome to join our leagues regardless of skill level or sports experience.

Job Description & Duties:

Youth Sports Instructors are expected to plan and lead a group of elementary-aged participants in youth sports classes with the goal of teaching skills and fundamentals of various sports. Some sports covered include soccer, basketball, t-ball, volleyball, ultimate frisbee and badminton. The emphasis is on skill building, fun, fitness, making new friends, sportsmanship and learning the sport. As a Youth Sports Instructor, you are responsible for promoting this atmosphere while keeping play safe and engaging.

Pay Rate:

$18.00 – $23.00 per hour

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Sports experience typically from high school or post-secondary institutions.
  • Experience in youth leadership.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions with a minimum of direct supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and exercise good judgment, courtesy, and tact when dealing with children, their parents/guardians, and the public.
  • Previous experience working with elementary and/or middle school-aged children.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Understand and communicate the basic rules and skills for a variety of sports.
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time.
  • CPR/First aid certification, or the ability to obtain it.
