Job summary

YMCA of Greater Montgomery is seeking staff to assist in youth and adult sports programming under the Sports and Teen Director. You will help plan, supervise, and run practices, games, and events, referee when needed, and support positive sportsmanship in a values-driven setting.

The role requires working Saturdays, with responsibilities including setup, safety, rule enforcement, record-keeping, and building strong relationships with players and parents.

Qualifications

• General sport knowledge in soccer, baseball, basketball and football through education, experience or prior involvement in youth programs.
• Current First Aid & CPR Certification or within 30 days of hire
• Mandatory Abuse Reporting and Youth Sports Training prior to first day
• Must be able to work Saturdays
• Keen desire to work with children and relate to them in a positive, patient, sensitive and non-judgmental manner

Responsibilities

• Arrives at least 15 minutes prior to game start time to properly prepare playing areas and ensure safety.
• Set-up and break down of equipment at sporting events/practices.
• Enforce rules/regulations for each league and maintain records (e.g. game scores, playtime).
• Maintain a safe and orderly environment and take precautions to protect participants, staff and facilities.
• Build positive relationships with players and parents; encourage volunteer involvement.
• Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
• Follow YMCA policies, rules, and safety procedures; complete incident/accident reports as necessary.

Job description

Under the direction of the Sports and Teen Director, youth sport staff will provide assistance in completing specific related to youth and adult sports programming. Assist in the overall program management, supervision, planning and implementing of youth sports practices, games and/or events for participants. Duties may include refereeing sports if short staffed and stepping in where needed. Encourages sportsmanship. This position supports the work of the Y to strengthen community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. In addition, every position in the YMCA of Greater Montgomery is responsible for upholding our mission by modeling behaviors that exemplify caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

MUST BE ABLE TO WORK SATURDAYS

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Arrives at least 15 minutes prior to game start time to properly prepare playing areas to ensure safety for all participants.
• Set-up and break down of equipment at sporting events/practices.
• Enforce rules/regulations for each sports league and instructional program and maintain records as required (i.e. game scores, player playtime).
• Maintains a safe and orderly environment. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect program participants, staff, equipment and facility.
• Listens to concerns, resolves programs and corrects inappropriate behavior. Documents
• situations and relays to Sports Director.
• Follows mandated abuse and incident reporting requirements.
• Help referee when needed.
• Builds effective, authentic relationships with players and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
• Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
• Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
• Exhibit positive public relations. Wear required YMCA attire to all games.
• Adheres to the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to: climb stairs, bend, stoop, kneel, twist, reach with hands, sit, stand for an extended period of time, climb ladders, walk, lift and/or move up to 40 pounds, have finger dexterity, grasp, perform repetitive motions, talk, hear and have visual acuity.
