Job summary

The YMCA of Greater Montgomery is seeking a Youth Sports Staff member in Montgomery, AL to assist with youth and adult sports programming under the Sports and Teen Director. The role includes planning, supervising practices and events, refereeing when needed, and maintaining safe facilities.

You will work on Saturdays and help foster sportsmanship, teamwork, and healthy living as part of the Y's mission to strengthen communities.

Qualifications

• General sport knowledge in soccer, baseball, basketball and football
• Desire to work with children in a patient, respectful manner
• Current First Aid & CPR Certification or within 30 days of hire
• Mandatory Abuse Reporting and Youth Sports Training prior to first day

Responsibilities

• Assist in planning and implementing youth sports practices, games and events
• Assist in overall program management and supervision of youth sports
• Referee when needed and enforce league rules
• Maintain safety and orderly environment; document incidents and reports
• Build relationships with players and parents and encourage volunteer involvement

Under the direction of the Sports and Teen Director, youth sport staff will provide assistance in completing specific related to youth and adult sports programming. Assist in the overall program management, supervision, planning and implementing of youth sports practices, games and/or events for participants. Duties may include refereeing sports if short staffed and stepping in where needed. Encourages sportsmanship. This position supports the work of the Y to strengthen community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. In addition, every position in the YMCA of Greater Montgomery is responsible for upholding our mission by modeling behaviors that exemplify caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. MUST BE ABLE TO WORK SATURDAYS

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Arrives at least 15 minutes prior to game start time to properly prepare playing areas to ensure safety for all participants.
• Set-up and break down of equipment at sporting events/practices.
• Enforce rules/regulations for each sports league and instructional program and maintain records as required (i.e. game scores, player playtime).
• Maintains a safe and orderly environment. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect program participants, staff, equipment and facility.
• Listens to concerns, resolves programs and corrects inappropriate behavior. Documents
• situations and relays to Sports Director.
• Follows mandated abuse and incident reporting requirements.
• Help referee when needed.
• Builds effective, authentic relationships with players and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
• Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
• Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
• Exhibit positive public relations. Wear required YMCA attire to all games.
• Adheres to the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must be able to work Saturdays
• General sport specific knowledge in soccer, baseball, basketball and football through education, experience or previous involvement in youth programs
• Must have a keen desire to work with children and have the ability to relate to them in apositive, patient, sensitive and non-judgmental manner
• Current First Aid & CPR Certification or within 30 days of hire
• Mandatory Abuse Reporting and Youth Sports Training prior to first day

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to: climb stairs, bend, stoop, kneel, twist, reach with hands, sit, stand for an extended period of time, climb ladders, walk, lift and/or move up to 40 pounds, have finger dexterity, grasp, perform repetitive motions, talk, hear and have visual acuity.
