Job summary

Teaneck Public Library is seeking a friendly, tech-savvy Library Assistant to join the Youth Services Department. You will assist children, teens, and caregivers, help with programs, and create welcoming library experiences.

This part-time, hourly role supports activities, graphics, and outreach, with day, evening, and weekend shifts as needed. A passion for youth literature and community connections is essential.

Qualifications

  • Experience in planning, leading, and evaluating children’s or teen programs.
  • Familiarity with children’s and young adult literature.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to multitask in a busy environment.
  • Strong creative skills, including the ability to design engaging graphics, displays, and content to support programs and services.
  • Proficiency with social media and internet research; Canva/Google Workspace experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Welcome and assist children, teens, and caregivers at the busy Youth Services and Teen Desks, serving patrons ages 0–19 and their families.
  • Offer friendly reference/readers’ advisory help and general assistance.
  • Assist with shelving, restocking displays, and maintaining the overall appearance of the Children’s and Teen library areas.
  • Collaborate on the planning, preparation, and execution of programs for children and teens, with opportunities to assist with or lead programs depending on experience and interest.
  • Create graphics, flyers, and digital content for display, social media and the website to promote programs and services.
  • Support outreach projects and events.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the department supervisor or director.

Job description

The Teaneck Public Library is seeking a friendly, creative, and tech-savvy team member to join our Youth Services Department as a Library Assistant. This position involves supporting all aspects of Youth Services, including assisting with programs, providing welcoming and helpful library assistance, and connecting with patrons of all ages. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about creating, implementing, and promoting engaging programs and services for children, teens, and their caregivers.

Responsibilities

Requirements
  • Genuine enthusiasm for working with children, teens, and families from diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including patience, adaptability, collaboration, and empathy.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, and comfort engaging effectively with children, teens, and caregivers.
  • Ability to provide friendly library services and respond appropriately to patron concerns, seeking guidance from a supervisor when necessary.
  • Ability to lift and move light materials and bend as needed.
  • Flexibility to work day, evening, and weekend shifts as scheduled.
Schedule:

This part-time hourly position may include day, evening, and weekend shifts (up to approximately 20 hours/week). Flexibility is required as schedules may change to meet the library’s needs.
