Shaker Heights Public Library in Shaker Heights, OH is seeking a HT Youth Services Associate to support youth, teens and families with reference, readers’ advisory and programming services for youth up to grade 12 and their caregivers.

The part-time position requires excellent problem-solving, multi-tasking, and collaborative teamwork in a diverse community, with hours including days, evenings and weekends.

Qualifications

  • Two years of college completed, BA preferred.
  • Knowledge of youth programming, early literacy milestones, and homework help.
  • Customer service experience.
  • Experience with diverse populations across backgrounds and ages.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to evaluate information for accuracy and currency.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and internet; quick to learn new technologies.

Responsibilities

Position Type: Part Time

Salary Range: $19.89 - $22.88 Hourly

Job Shift: Variety of days, evenings, weekends

Shaker Heights Public Library is seeking a HT Youth Services Associate to help us meet our mission of strengthening our diverse community and transforming lives by providing reference, readers’ advisory and programming services for youth up to grade 12 and the adults who care for them.

Must have excellent problem-solving skills, be able to switch between multiple tasks, and enjoy working collaboratively on a daily basis, this means interacting with children and teens locate and use library materials; choose items to meet their interests; find and evaluate information; use electronic resources including databases, e-media, and computers. Must enjoy working with and helping youth of all ages and backgrounds in a diverse community.

Qualifications
  • A minimum of two years of college, with a bachelor’s degree strongly preferred
  • General knowledge of youth programming, early literacy milestones, popular culture, and basic homework help strategies
  • Customer service experience
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial and socioeconomic backgrounds, and of all genders, sexual orientations, and ages
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Research skills, including the ability to evaluate information sources for accuracy, reliability, and currency
  • Ability to demonstrate familiarity with Microsoft Office and the internet. Ability to quickly learn new technologies and assist our customers with them

Union Status: This is a union position.

Hours: Half-time, 20 hours per week. This position works a variety of day, evening, and weekend hours.

Pay Information: SHPL typically hires new staff in at the entry rate of the posted pay scale. Exceptions may be made for successful applicants who have significant (5+ years) direct experience in the position at a level beyond what is expected of a new hire.
