Job summary

WellLife Network is seeking a Recreation Counselor to provide structured, pro-social activities for youth in the Dix Hills Community Residence Program. You will promote emotional growth, creativity, and independence while modeling healthy coping strategies.

You will plan monthly calendars, manage budgets, supervise youth, and collaborate with the treatment team to align recreation with individual goals. A high school diploma and NY driver’s license are required.

Qualifications

• Minimum of a high school diploma with relevant experience working with children and adolescents who have emotional and behavioral disorders.
• An associate’s degree in human services, psychology, recreation, or a related field is preferred.
• A valid New York State driver’s license is required.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and document a monthly calendar of recreational activities with youth.
• Design and implement community-based skill-building outings and follow-up discussions.
• Manage the recreational activity budget, ensuring cost-effectiveness and alignment with priorities.
• Purchase and maintain recreational supplies with approval; keep materials organized.
• Communicate schedules and updates to staff; build local resource connections.
• Provide attentive supervision and individualized support for youth's safety and well-being.
• Demonstrate positive behavior and act as a consistent role model for youth.
• Apply strength-based approaches to highlight abilities and promote resilience.
• Coach youth in daily living and interpersonal skills; document progress.
• Contribute to maintaining a structured, trauma-informed environment.
• Provide crisis intervention and behavioral support as needed.
• Transport and supervise youth during outings, appointments, and activities.
• Engage families by sharing outcomes and encouraging home skill-building.
• Offer informal counseling and encouragement to support emotional development.
• Monitor medication compliance as directed by staff.
• Promptly report incidents and complete documentation per policy.
• Assist in maintaining a clean, organized living space and model household tasks.
• Attend required staff meetings and trainings; participate in agency events.
• Perform additional duties to support program operations.
