Job summary

AltaPointe Health's Children’s Residential Services Program seeks a qualified Recreation Therapist to support children and adolescents aged 5 to 18 with severe emotional or behavioral disturbances. You will design and deliver developmentally appropriate activity therapies in collaboration with the treatment team.

You will also document progress, monitor crises, facilitate groups, and help youths transition to less restrictive settings, while engaging families and caregivers in discharge planning.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Knowledge of psychiatric disorders in child/adolescent and adult populations.
• Knowledge of growth and development of child/adolescent and adult consumers as related to all intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and physical aspects of the consumers’ development.
• Knowledge of cultural diversity.
• Knowledge of behavior management, crisis intervention and interventions common to acute psychotic consumers, as well as to non-violent crisis intervention practices.
• Knowledge of Psychiatric Rehabilitation principles.
• Knowledge of available community resources.
• Knowledge of educational methods appropriate to children/adolescents and adults with severe and persistent psychiatric disorders.
• Knowledge of therapeutic activities (i.e. recreation and leisure, expressive arts).

Responsibilities

• Utilizes assessment data to design appropriate recreation and activity therapies in consultation with the Recreational Specialist.
• Plans and develops activities according to the consumer’s rehabilitation needs.
• Facilitates and co-facilitates recreation therapy groups.
• Implements planned activities.
• Provides ongoing monitoring and interaction with consumers.
• Teaches consumers the necessary skills to transition to less restrictive setting.
• Assists with special facility events such as talent shows and seasonal festivities.
• Recognizes crisis states and employs deescalation or resolution techniques per policy.
• Collaborates with treatment team and outside sources in service delivery.
• Adheres to professional ethics.
• Demonstrates appropriate competencies for child/adolescent and adult populations.
• Documents in a timely and clear manner per AltaPointe policy.
• Treats consumers with care, dignity and confidentiality.
• Participates in performance improvement activities and required trainings.
