Job summary

The Kansas City Public Library Plaza Branch is seeking a Youth Services Librarian to engage children and families with creative programming, coordinate school visits, and partner with youth-serving organizations. You will serve in a full-time role under the Plaza Youth Services Manager, delivering engaging library services to the Plaza service area.

• Outstanding customer service with trauma-informed approach.
• Knowledge of children’s and teen literature and development.
• Plan story times using Every Child Ready to Read.
• Develop partnerships with community organizations serving youth.
• Work independently and as part of a team.
• Adapt to changing circumstances and trends in youth services.
• Excellent oral and written communication.
• Advanced computer skills used in libraries.
• Reliable transportation to access locations.
• Work with diverse populations.
• Able to lift 30 lbs.
• English required; non-English skills valued.

Responsibilities

• Provide and promote programming and services for children and teens; coordinate youth events and outreach.
• Lead or assist in Plaza location operations in absence of managers.
• Meet regularly with Plaza Youth Services Manager; share concerns and ideas.
• Assist in collection maintenance and marketing to location patrons.
• Coordinate with IS about children’s computers and access.
• Plan system-wide programs for youth and families; communicate with staff.
• Attend staff meetings and relay information to Plaza staff.
• Maintain shared calendars and communicate with leadership.
• Connect with schools, childcare providers, and community organizations.
• Prepare monthly reports and share stories of engagement.
• Supervise temporary employees and volunteers; assist other branches with Kid’s Cafe.
• Perform other related work and special projects.
