Job summary

Germantown Community Library is seeking a part-time Library Assistant 2 to support Youth Services and patron engagement. The role balances hands-on programming with outreach, crafts, storytelling, and shelving tasks, while using LEAP to manage patron accounts.

Candidates should have good communication skills, basic tech abilities, and a customer-service mindset, with weekend/evening availability. Experience in libraries or customer service is preferred, along with familiarity with Canva and

Qualifications

HS Diploma or GED required.
1-2 years library experience preferred.
1-2 years customer service experience preferred.
Some experience working with children.
Basic knowledge of library systems (LEAP) is a plus.
Experience with Canva preferred.
Experience with children in a public setting/customer service is preferred.
Experience with digital resources preferred (Libby, Kanapy, etc.).

Responsibilities

Prepare crafts, activities, and materials for all children’s programs.
Assist Youth Services staff and guest presenters with daily programs and activities.
Help set up and clean up program spaces and materials.
Engage with children and families during programs in a welcoming, enthusiastic, and age-appropriate manner.
Participate in storytelling, crafts, games, music, movement activities, and additional children’s programming.
Develop creative ideas for future children’s programs and, as experience is gained, plan and lead programs independently.
Help create a fun, welcoming environment where children can explore, learn, create, and enjoy the library.
Assist patrons in locating books, multimedia, and other resources.
Use the LEAP system to create and manage library cards and patron accounts.
Maintain organized and welcoming library spaces in the children’s department.
Contribute ideas for innovative programs and community outreach.
Know and understand the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of a public library.
Follow all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records.
Help with basic library tasks and other duties as assigned.
