Job Title: Youth Program Assistant

Location: Rohingya Culture Center, 2740 W. Devon Ave. Chicago, IL 60659

Starting Salary: $18 per hour

Supervised by: Youth Program Coordinator

Schedule / Duration: Summer: Monday-Thursday 3:00pm-7:00pm

Fridays 2:30pm-6:30pm

School Year: Monday-Friday 4:00-8:00pm

Position Overview:

The Youth Program Assistant at the Rohingya Culture Center (RCC) will support refugee children and families in accessing education and succeeding in school. Working under the Youth Program Coordinator, the Assistant will help with school enrollment, IEP support, after-school programming, summer programming, and volunteer coordination. They will also assist with social-emotional learning activities and collaborate with case managers to connect families with needed resources. This role requires strong organizational skills, cultural sensitivity, and a passion for working with youth and refugee communities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • School Enrollment & IEP Coordination (K-12): Help enroll children in K-12 schools and ensure compliance. Coordinate IEPs and encourage parental involvement in school activities.
  • After-School Program Assistance: Assist in tutoring and academic support for students, ensuring safety and quality. Assist in development of academic enrichment and social-emotional learning activities, such as workshops, guest speakers, and educational events. Assist in guiding other tutors and volunteers.
  • Summer Program: Assist in summer program activities, overseeing youth, guiding other tutors and volunteers. Be a chaperone for occasional Friday Field Trips in the summer (could range from from 9am-4pm)
  • Collaboration with Case Managers: Align educational goals with family self-sufficiency plans and connect families to additional resources.
  • Meeting Program Metrics: Track and report on school enrollment, student attendance, and academic progress.
  • Misc: Assist with administrative tasks and development of programs as directed by the Program Coordinator or Director.


Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Pursuing or have received a Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Work, Child Development, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience:
    • Experience working with refugee or immigrant populations, particularly in educational settings preferred.
    • Familiarity with early intervention programs and school enrollment processes in the Chicago Public School System preferred.
  • Skills & Abilities:
    • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities and track progress toward specific goals and metrics.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and motivate diverse groups.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and basic data management tools.
    • Fluency in English required; proficiency in Rohingya, Burmese, or Malay is a plus.
