Job summary

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley is seeking part-time staff to support after-school programming in San Jose. You will supervise groups of up to 20 youth, facilitate engaging activities, and mentor participants to help them navigate challenges and set goals.

Ideal candidates are reliable, enthusiastic, and committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, justice, and accessibility. Must be at least 18, with background checks and willingness to obtain First Aid certification.

Qualifications

  • First Aid certification preferred; willingness to obtain if not held.
  • Excellent communication skills with diverse youth and families.
  • Multi-linguistic abilities (Spanish, Vietnamese) considered a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and keep youth safe in a nurturing environment.
  • Facilitate activities promoting social, emotional, and physical development for groups of up to 20 youth.
  • Mentor youth and help them set and achieve goals.
  • Collaborate with parents, teachers, and community partners to support development.
  • Maintain records of progress and participation; respond to emergencies with first aid.
  • Create a positive, inclusive, and safe after-school environment.

Requirements
Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions:
  • Supervision & Safety: Ensure a safe and nurturing environment for youth participants
  • Facilitate engaging activities that promote social, emotional, and physical development for a group of 20 members
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to members, helping them navigate challenges and achieve their goals
  • Implement educational programs that align with best practices in childhood development
  • Supervise and manage groups of children in various settings, ensuring a safe and supportive environment
  • Collaborate with parents, teachers, and community organizations to enhance the overall development of youth
  • Utilize skills in sports coaching, theater, or other extracurricular activities to enrich the program offerings
  • Maintain accurate records of members' progress and participation in activities
  • Respond to emergencies with appropriate first aid measures when necessary
Classroom Management and Teaching
  • Establish classroom rules and behavior
  • Provide children with basic needs and ensure supervision
  • Adapt teaching methods to children's interests and learning styles
  • Manage classroom activities, lessons, play, breaks, and meals
  • Track children's progress and communicate effectively with parents and teachers
  • Maintain a clean and organized classroom
Relationships
  • Mentoring: Serve as a positive role model and mentor to young participants, fostering their self-esteem and personal development
  • Maintaining a Positive Environment: Cultivate a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere where every child feels valued and respected
  • Team Collaboration: Collaborate with colleagues to ensure program goals are met and share best practices
Qualifications & Experience:
  • Experience working with students in educational or recreational settings is preferred
  • Background in after-school programs, sports coaching, theater, or special education is highly desirable
  • Knowledge of childhood development principles and effective classroom management techniques
  • Ability to educate and inspire youth through various activities while fostering a positive learning environment
  • Certification in First Aid is preferred; willingness to obtain certification if not currently held
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to build rapport with children and their families
  • A commitment to promoting inclusivity and understanding diverse backgrounds among youth
  • Department of Justice and FBI Background check clearance
  • 18 yrs. of age
  • NCLB (No Child Left Behind) certification required/ 48 Transferable Units
  • Multi-conversational language skills are a plus (Spanish, Vietnamese)
  • Experience or coursework in Childhood Development, or related fields, will be given preference

  • While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds (with support, a child who has fallen)
  • Specialized equipment: Walkie Talkie radios for communication
