Job summary

Whatcom Family YMCA in Bellingham, WA is seeking a part-time Climbing Wall staff member to create a safe, welcoming environment for youth and recreational climbers. You will maintain ropes, anchors, holds and supervise open climb times in accordance with YMCA policies.

Responsibilities include coaching youth climbing classes, enforcing safety procedures, performing equipment inspections, and supporting the climbing wall coordinator with annual safety checks.

Qualifications

• Minimum age 18
• Climbing experience including belaying
• Knowledge of climbing safety systems and inspections
• Experience leading youth
• Child abuse prevention training prior to working shifts

Responsibilities

• Coaches and facilitates youth climbing classes and open climb times.
• Maintain a safe climbing environment by maintaining and monitoring climbing wall ropes, anchors and holds.
• Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures
• Ensures appropriate equipment is clean and notifies climbing wall coordinator of needs regarding annual safety inspection of the wall by a licensed or certified organization.
• Performs equipment inspections, ensures appropriate equipment is clean and available as needed
• Keeps the gym and gear room clean and organized
• Follows organization’s policies and procedures regarding protecting youth from abuse; including screening and selection, training and supervision, and responding to allegations. Communicate to all staff and volunteers the organization’s commitment to protect youth from abuse
• Follows mandated reporting requirements
