Job summary

YMCA of Greater New York seeks a Youth Chess Instructor to teach fundamental chess skills to children and teens in a fun, supportive environment. You will create an inclusive, positive classroom, guide progress, and collaborate with parents and staff to promote YMCA programs.

The role requires at least a high school diploma (bachelor's in Fine Arts preferred) and 1+ year teaching chess. CPR/First Aid and YMCA Coaching 101 training are desirable. On-site classes across branches offered.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts preferred.
  • Minimum of one year teaching Chess to children/teens in a structured setting.
  • USCF rating is a plus, but passion for the game matters more.

Responsibilities

  • Teach progressive Chess lessons from fundamentals to early tactical concepts.
  • Provide supervision and ensure safety per YMCA standards.
  • Communicate progress to parents/guardians and assist with registrations.
  • Engage participants with an inclusive, motivating classroom atmosphere.
  • Set up and break down chess boards, pieces, and clocks for each session.
  • Attend trainings and participate in program promotion efforts.
