Job summary

The Allen Institute for AI (Ai2) in Seattle seeks a Young Investigator to lead a three-year project developing NeuralGCM+ for climate modeling, combining ML with physics-based components and open-source collaboration.

You will design training/testing regimes, improve model generalization to unseen climates, collaborate with experts, mentor interns, and contribute to open-source code with daily standups.

Qualifications

• Substantial experience building and deploying ML applications.
• Fluent in Python and collaborative coding practices.
• PhD in computer/computational science, applied mathematics/statistics, or atmospheric science with ML publications.
• Excellent communications skills.

Responsibilities

• Select, design and evaluate NeuralGCM+ training and testing cases using historical data and model outputs.
• Conceive and implement NeuralGCM+ model improvements to improve generalizability to unseen climates.
• Present results at AI and climate modeling conferences and in peer-reviewed publications.
• Open-source code development as part of a tightly connected team, including daily meetings and code reviews.
• Mentor interns as appropriate.
