Job summary

YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit's Boll Family YMCA in Detroit is hiring a Yoga Instructor for evening classes (5:30 pm or 6:30 pm weekdays). Under the guidance of the Member Experience Director, you will lead safe, engaging yoga sessions that welcome participants of all levels and fitness backgrounds.

You’ll build community in class, assess participants’ needs, maintain attendance records, and respond to emergencies in line with YMCA policies.

Qualifications

• CPR, First Aid and AED certifications are required.
• National group fitness certification or YMCA Foundations preferred.
• YMCA Healthy Lifestyles certification within 60 days of hire.
• Prior experience teaching group wellness classes is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational yoga classes while building authentic relationships with members.
• Answer questions within scope to support participants in achieving goals.
• Maintain wellness knowledge to provide effective information and support.
• Adjust approach to meet diverse participant needs and capabilities.
• Keep attendance records and follow YMCA policies; respond to emergencies.

General Function

Under the guidance of the Member Experience Director, the Yoga Instructor instructs yoga classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that welcomes people of all skill and fitness levels. The Yoga Instructor effectively builds community within the class and modifies class as needed to meet varied health, ability, and cultural needs.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational yoga classes, while building effective, authentic relationships with members.

Ask and answer questions within their scope of knowledge from program participants and members to support and celebrate them in achieving their goals related to the program or personal goals, mastering specific skills, or overall health and well‑being.

Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.

Observe and adjust the approach to support all participants’ capabilities, physical conditions, health, and culture.

Keeps accurate class attendance records and follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergencies.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience/Training/Certifications

Required certifications: CPR, First Aid, AED, national certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) in group fitness instruction or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification.

Certification in areas of expertise.

YMCA Healthy Lifestyles certification within 60 days of hire.

At least one year of experience teaching group wellness classes is preferred.

Abilities & Skills

The ability to communicate verbally to individuals and small groups.

The ability to Attract and retain participants.

Flexibility to work days, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed
