Job summary

The Sioux Falls YMCA is seeking a dependable Custodian to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment at the Sioux Falls Family YMCA facility. You will perform daily, weekly, and periodic cleaning tasks to support members, guests, and staff.

This full-time, non-exempt position offers a schedule of 3pm–11:30pm (or 2:30pm–11:30pm) with lunch break, Sunday through Wednesday or Thursday through Monday. You will follow YMCA cleaning lists, use proper safety procedures, and report facility

Qualifications

• Custodial or janitorial experience preferred but not required.
• Reliable, punctual, and able to follow schedules.
• Attention to detail and able to work independently.
• Knowledge of cleaning procedures and safety practices or willingness to learn.
• Ability to perform essential physical duties, with or without accommodation.

Responsibilities

• Complete all tasks on daily and weekly custodial cleaning lists.
• Maintain cleanliness throughout the facility with routine and deep cleaning.

Job Title: Custodian

Department: 12 Building/Membership

Reports To: Member Services Manager

Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt

Position Summary

The Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, sanitation, safety, and overall appearance of the Sioux Falls Family YMCA facility. This role supports a clean, welcoming environment for members, guests, and staff by completing assigned daily, weekly, and periodic cleaning tasks.

Primary Responsibilities

• Complete all tasks listed on assigned daily and weekly custodial cleaning lists in accordance with YMCA standards.
• Maintain cleanliness throughout the facility by performing routine and deep cleaning as scheduled.
• Respond promptly to spills, accidents, and urgent cleaning needs.
• Safely use and maintain cleaning equipment and supplies.
• Follow all YMCA safety, sanitation, and chemical‑handling procedures.
• Communicate facility or maintenance concerns to a supervisor in a timely manner.
• Assist with special cleaning projects, events, or additional duties as assigned.

Scope of Responsibility

Custodial duties apply to the entire Sioux Falls Family YMCA facility. Assigned tasks may vary daily based on operational needs and will be directed through posted cleaning lists, supervisor instructions, or facility schedules.

Schedule

3pm-11:30pm with 1/2 hour lunch OR 2:30pm-11:30pm with 1 hour lunch
Wed-Sun OR Thurs-Mon

Qualifications

• Previous custodial or janitorial experience preferred but not required.
  
• Reliable, punctual, and committed to maintaining assigned work schedules.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
• Knowledge of cleaning procedures, equipment, and safety practices or willingness to learn.
• Ability to manage time effectively and complete assigned tasks efficiently.
• Ability to perform essential physical duties, with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Strong communication skills and a positive, professional attitude.
• Commitment to YMCA policies, safety standards, and maintaining a clean, welcoming environment.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and reach for extended periods.
  
• Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.
• Frequent use of cleaning chemicals, equipment, and supplies.
• Exposure to wet surfaces, cleaning solutions, and varying temperatures.
• Ability to work indoors and outdoors as needed.
• May require evening, weekend, or holiday shifts.
