Job summary

Federal Express Corporation in New York is hiring a yard switcher / package handler to move trailers between yards and doors and to assist with loading, unloading, and sorting packages by hand. You may also perform pre- and post-trip inspections, use the Yard Management System, and follow safety procedures.

No education is required, but six months of package handling or switching/CDL operator experience is preferred.

Qualifications

No formal education required.
Six months of experience as a package handler or switching/CDL operator preferred.
Must have a valid driver's license and maintain a DOT file.
Ability to discern numbers and sort packages correctly.
Ability to use basic tools and equipment such as skate wheel rollers, dock carts, hand-held scanners, chutes and unloading devices.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work well in a fast-paced team environment.

Responsibilities

Move trailers from yard to load/unload doors and between doors and yard.
Coordinate trailer movements with management or central control.
Document trailer moves using Yard Management System or switcher cards.
Perform pre- and post-trip inspections on switcher equipment.
Follow yard switching safety procedures.
Handle packages: load/unload onto/from delivery vehicles, trailers, carts, and load gratings.
Sort packages by scanning, reading labels and memorizing information.
Perform other duties as assigned.
