Job summary

Carter Lumber is seeking a Yard Supervisor to blend administrative duties with active yard work in a hybrid role. You will hire, coach, and discipline staff while ensuring smooth customer service and efficient yard operations.

Qualifications

• Must have prior supervisory experience in customer service, preferably in a lumber yard.
• Dispatch experience is a plus and helps coordinate shipments.
• Ability to train and direct others effectively in a fast-paced setting.
• Familiarity with building materials and yard operations.
• Strong leadership and teamwork skills are essential.
• Experience using Microsoft Office, especially Excel.

Responsibilities

• Manage employees and provide direction, communication, and discipline as needed.
• Assist customers with selections and loading materials with a friendly, helpful attitude.
• Oversee yard operations: pulling, staging, dispatching, and scheduling orders.
• Maintain yard inventory, conduct cycle counts, and ensure safety and policy compliance.
• Maintain all yard equipment and coordinate vehicle maintenance.

The Yard Supervisor role at Carter Lumber is a hybrid of administrative work and working in the lumber yard. This is not a desk job by any means – you will play a very active and vital role in the functioning of the lumber yard!

Description

Employee management, customer service and yard operations are the key components in this role. For employee management, you will be tasked with hiring, communicating, and disciplining.You will also be responsible for setting theproper example for all lumber yard employees to mirror.

For customer service, it’s important to be willing tohelp customers as needed. This entails assisting them with the selection and loading of their materialswith a friendly attitude.

For yard operations, you will ensure that material is accurately pulled and staged for pickup anddelivery. You will assist withdispatching by structuring the shipping of orders, including scheduling. You will be responsible for maintaining the inventory in the yard by conducting cycle counts and keeping the yard organized. You will ensure all yard policiesare followedincluding sales, inventory, and safety. Finally, you will take charge ofmaintaining all equipment; scheduling vehiclesfor service and keeping up their maintenance schedules.

Requirements

• Previous supervisory experience in customer service, preferably in a lumber yard
