Job summary

Ocean County YMCA in Toms River, NJ is seeking an Entry level, part-time Youth Program Assistant for before/after care. You will supervise a group of children, implement activities, and support staff to ensure a safe, engaging experience aligned with YMCA values.

The role emphasizes effective communication with supervisors, positive discipline, and activity planning, with required NJCCIS and First Aid/CPR training within 30 days of hire.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with children preferred.
  • Experience preferred in recreational activities, sports, songs/music, or related activities.
  • At least 16 years of age.
  • Attend Orientation, NJCCIS online training, First Aid/CPR certification, and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.
  • Ability to plan, lead, and participate in activities in various settings.
  • Ability to move actively with the group of children at site.
  • React appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Provide health physical and proof of TB testing within 30 days of hire.

Provides direct supervision of a group of children during before and after care programs. Provides a quality experience to children and parents focused on YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

Essential Functions
  1. 1. Assists in implementation of programming with a designated group of children
  2. 2. Communicate effectively with Supervisor on a continuous basis. Share all needs of children and incidents throughout the day.
  3. 3. Communicate with children clearly and effectively using positive discipline.
  4. 4. Help plan, supervise, and implement YKids curriculum and schedule.
  5. 5. Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
  6. 6. Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
  7. 7. Attends staff meeting and trainings, including NJCCIS trainings.
  8. 8. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.
  9. 11. Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
