Job summary

HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division is seeking a skilled inspector to verify structural fabrication, assembly, installation and repair work against approved drawings and customer requirements. You will read drawings, weld symbols, and tolerances to ensure quality and safety on complex naval projects.

The role requires knowledge of structural steel fabrication and ship construction practices, with the ability to work in confined spaces and various positions.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of structural steel fabrication and ship construction practices.
• Ability to work safely in confined spaces, elevated areas, dry docks, tanks and onboard vessels.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and work in awkward positions; able to work any shift.
• Ability to lift 40 lbs regularly.

Responsibilities

• Inspect structural fabrication, assembly installation and repair work to ensure compliance with approved drawings, procedures and customer requirements.
• Verify workmanship meets customer requirements and project specifications.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, weld symbols and tolerances.
• Identify non-conformances and coordinate with manufacturing teams for corrective actions.

Nice to Have

• High School graduate or equivalent is preferred.
• Previous shipyard, structural fabrication, welding or quality inspection experience.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, weld symbols and specifications.
• Ability to perform dimensional inspections using precision measuring tools
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
