Job summary

City of Sioux City is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic-In-Training for the Wastewater Treatment Plant. The role supports routine maintenance and repair of plant facilities under supervision, with a Monday–Friday 7:00am–3:30pm schedule and on-call time for evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Requires a high school diploma or GED and a valid driver’s license. Experience in mechanical maintenance and a water or wastewater facility is preferred; Iowa Grade 1 Wastewater System Certificate must be

Qualifications

• Graduation from standard high school or GED.
• Experience in mechanical maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery and experience in a water or wastewater facility preferred.
• Or any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Responsibilities

• Assist with maintenance and repair work on plant facilities, pumps, engines, motors, chemical feeders, filters, bar screens, valves, pipes, heat exchangers, air compressors, heating/cooling equipment, aeration equipment, and all other major mechanical and hydraulic equipment in a wastewater treatment facility and collection system.
• Check grease charts and bearing temperatures to assure proper maintenance of equipment.
• Change spark plugs, oil and related equipment.
• Welds cast iron, steel, brass, copper, and aluminum.
• Assist in the installation of new equipment.
• Monitor facilities and equipment to identify and repair leaks or other malfunctions.
• Operate pumps and machinery.
• Maintain log of maintenance activities, repairs, and operations.
• Keep records and makes reports.
• Maintain buildings and grounds.
• Perform janitorial work.
• Washes and maintains filters.
• Collect water samples.
• Monitor plant operation and controls; make adjustments to maintain proper operation.
• Maintain regular and punctual attendance and on-call rotations as assigned; may be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, other agencies, fellow employees, and the general public.
• Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in emergencies.
