Job summary

Essex County College is seeking a Writing Tutor for the CAT Grant program. The role involves delivering writing instruction to students with developmental disabilities through one-on-one and group formats, building real-life literacy skills, and assessing progress.

The tutor will design authentic lesson plans, utilize multimedia tools, and develop individualized tutoring plans while maintaining strict confidentiality and accurate record-keeping.

Qualifications

• Teach writing skills through individual sessions, group workshops, and tutorials.
• Create authentic lesson plans using real-life scenarios.
• Create assessments to measure student skills pre- and post-tutoring sessions.
• Engage students in creative ways to increase their skills.
• Utilize multimedia tools in tutoring sessions.
• Assess each student’s needs and develop an individualized tutoring plan.
• Document student participation and progress.
• Establish and maintain an accurate filing system and a guide to office files.
• Maintain confidentiality and security of student and staff records.
• Prepare routine, special, and ancillary reports as required.
• Perform other related duties as required.

Supervisory Role

• 1. Teach writing skills needed for independent living to students with intellectual and developmental disabilities through individualized sessions, group workshops, and/or tutorial sessions.
• 2. Create authentic lesson plans using real-life scenarios.
• 3. Create assessments to measure student skills pre- and post-tutoring sessions.
• 4. Engage students in creative ways to increase their skills.
• 5. Utilize multimedia tools.
• 6. Assess each student's needs and develop an individualized tutoring plan to meet each student's needs.
• 7. Document student participation in tutoring and their progress.
• 8. Establish and maintain an accurate filing system and a typed guide to office files and their location.
• 9. Maintain strict confidentiality and security of student and staff records.
• 10. Prepare routine, special, and ancillary reports as required.
• 11. Perform other related duties as required.

• C. Cross-training to help students in the absence of other tutors
• D. Maintaining the work area in a professional manner.
