Job summary

Sonoma State University seeks an tenure-track Assistant Professor of Rhetoric and Composition and Writing Program Director to lead the university's first-year writing program and teach courses in rhetoric, composition, and upper-division literacies. The role includes program leadership and scholarly activity.

The candidate will coordinate curriculum, mentor faculty, and promote culturally responsive pedagogy, while contributing to graduate teaching if/when the MA program is reinstated.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. or Ed.D. in rhetoric and composition, writing studies, or closely related field by Aug 1, 2027.
• Graduate-level coursework in composition theory and pedagogy.
• Experience teaching at the university level and ability to teach first-year writing.
• Ability to coordinate and administer a university writing program.
• Commitment to inclusive teaching for diverse linguistic/cultural backgrounds.
• Active scholarly research in rhetoric, composition, or writing studies.

Responsibilities

• Teach rhetoric and composition courses, including first-year writing.
• Teach upper-division courses emphasizing digital and multimodal literacies and professional communication.
• Coordinate curriculum development and program assessment as Writing Program Director.
• Provide mentoring and professional development for lecturer and tenure-line faculty.
• Engage in service to the University, profession, and community.
• Support writing across the curriculum and graduate teaching when the MA program returns.
