Job summary

The State of Michigan is seeking a Workplace Safety Representative to perform investigations and analyses of workplace safety in a field-based capacity across Michigan. You will ensure compliance with MIOSH Act and related safety rules, applying knowledge to minimize risks in construction and industry.

This hybrid, field-oriented position features a home office with travel to Marquette, Alger, or Delta Counties; relocation to Michigan may be required if currently outside the state.

Qualifications

• Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school and one of the following.
• One year of responsibility for workplace safety.
• One year of experience investigating/inspecting workplaces for compliance with occupational safety standards.
• Six years of skilled trade work experience in construction or general industry, two years of which shall have been as a journey level skilled trade worker.
• Possession of a bachelor's degree in any major.

Responsibilities

• Review, investigate, and analyze workplace operations, environment, tools, equipment, and processes to ensure MIOSH Act and other safety rules are adhered to.
• Provide independent work with minimal management assistance, applying applicable rules and regulations to minimize safety risks.
• Operate as a field-position with travel; establish Official Workstation in Marquette, Alger, or Delta Counties.
• Work to ensure a safe and healthy environment for Michigan workers.

Performs and completes a variety of professional assignments involving the review, investigation, and analysis of workplace operations, environment, tools, equipment, and processes in a broad range of construction workplaces to ensure the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Act (MIOSH Act) and other workplace safety rules and regulations are appropriately adhered to providing a safe and healthy work environment for Michigan workers. Performs work independently with minimum assistance from management through application of knowledge, practices, rules, policies and regulations related to industry standards to minimize potential safety and health risks in the workplace.

Work Location

The WSR works from a home office (that is, their home). However, this is a field position that requires the establishment of the “Official Workstation” for travel purposes to be in Marquette, Alger, or Delta Counties.

All work must be performed in the Michigan. If you currently reside outside of Michigan, you must relocate to Michigan to perform the duties of this position.

Required Education And Experience

Applicants can qualify for this position by meeting ANY of the following:

• Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school AND one of the following:
• One year of responsibility for workplace safety.
• One year of experience investigating/inspecting workplaces for compliance with occupational safety standards.
• Six years of skilled trade work experience in construction or general industry, two years of which shall have been as a journey level skilled trade worker.
• Professional level experience in the state classified service; or one year of experience in a professional trainee classification in the state classified service; or six months of experience as a Senior Executive Management Assistant 11, 13, or 15 in the state classified service.
• Possession of a bachelor's degree in any major.

Applicants who possess a degree from a foreign college or university must have their academic credentials evaluated or converted into U.S. educational equivalents unless the degree has been recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Pre-Employment Requirements

Special Requirements, Licenses, And Certifications

Position requires an annual audiometric test and the mandatory use of a respirator, which requires an annual physical to ensure the ability to perform the duties of this position. In addition, some positions may require candidates to pass a hyperbaric tunnel physical as a portion of the hiring/interview process to ensure the ability to perform investigations in a pressurized tunnel.

Possession of a Michigan driver’s license.
