Program Aid for Free Expression, Intellectual Freedom & Constructive Dialogue Program

DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:

The Free Expression, Intellectual Freedom, & Constructive Dialogue Program helps students develop intellectual courage and dialogue skills, helps faculty and staff understand and model intellectual, academic, and expressive freedoms, and collaborates with administrators and others to uphold a campus culture characterized by free inquiry and expression. Job location: UW Laramie Campus, Old Main

Pay rate or range: $12/hour

JOB PURPOSE:

Support the program's director in planning and promoting campus events, learning and development initiatives, and tracking of our progress. In addition, support the program by assisting in general office duties including designing flyers and reports, delivering program materials to other campus offices, and providing support for Advisory Board meetings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist with planning, coordinating, and promoting program events, workshops, speaker programs, and other educational activities.
  • Support the development and promotion of student and employee learning and development initiatives.
  • Assist with program communications, including drafting and distributing announcements, creating promotional materials, maintaining program calendars, and updating program-related web and social media content as directed.
  • Design flyers, informational materials, presentations, reports, and other communications using appropriate digital tools.
  • Assist with tracking program activities, participation, outreach, and other information used to monitor and report program progress.
  • Assist with preparing materials, agendas, communications, and logistics for Advisory Board meetings.
  • Conduct basic research and gather information related to free expression, intellectual freedom, academic freedom, constructive dialogue, and related program activities.
  • Deliver program materials and communications to campus offices and other locations as needed.
  • Maintain organized electronic and physical files and assist with general administrative and office duties.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Assist with special projects and time-sensitive program initiatives.
  • Provide event-day support, including preparation of materials, registration, room setup, and post-event follow-up.
  • Assist with occasional photography, videography, or other documentation of program activities, as appropriate.
  • Participate in training and professional development related to program activities, communication, event planning, and workplace responsibilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be a currently enrolled University of Wyoming student in good academic standing.
  • Must be eligible, have received and accepted work study award through Student Financial Aid for the applicable semester and/or academic year.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Canva and ability to create professional-quality flyers, promotional materials, presentations, and other visual communications.
  • Ability to follow instructions, complete assigned tasks, and meet established deadlines.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience with event planning, social marketing, communications, social media, graphic design, or office administration.
  • Familiarity with digital design, content management, social media, or learning platforms.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Adobe Creative Cloud, iMovie, or similar tools.
  • Interest in intellectual, academic, and expressive freedoms, constructive dialogue, higher education, or related topics.
  • Previous experience working in a professional, university, or office environment.

This position provides practical experience in higher education administration, program development, event planning, communications, marketing, research, project coordination, and professional office operations. The student employee will develop transferable skills in written and oral communication, organization, project management, digital communication, graphic design, data tracking, event coordination, and professional collaboration.

The position also provides opportunities to observe and participate in the development and implementation of a university-wide program focused on intellectual, academic, and expressive freedoms and constructive dialogue. These experiences may be particularly valuable for students interested in careers in higher education, public administration, law, government, public policy, communications, nonprofit organizations, education, student affairs, and related fields.

WORK LOCATION:

On-campus: This position provides vital support to campus customers, and the successful candidate must be available to work and perform essential job functions on campus, understanding our location is at 7,220 feet above sea level.
