Required Certifications
For this position, you will be required to become a Union Pacific certified driver during your probationary period. To become certified, you must meet the following Motor Vehicle and Medical Requirements:
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Have a valid driver's license
- Have an acceptable driving record per your Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)
- You may need to obtain your Commercial Driver's License (CDL) if operating vehicles with a GVWR of 26,000 lbs or greater. If required, obtain your CDL during your probationary period.
Medical Requirements: Must meet the physical qualifications for commercial motor vehicle drivers as specified by the FMCSA. Final medical determination is made by Union Pacific Health and Medical Services.
Accountabilities
- Inspect and maintain tools, roadway machines, vehicles, and equipment.
- Conduct maintenance, repairs, and troubleshoot malfunctions.
- Organize and track information, and coordinate team work.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing, using print and digital information.
- Adhere to safety rules, practices, and procedures.
- Foster positive relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and customers, and handle conflicts effectively.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations, operational guidelines, and FRA requirements.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications - Required
- Valid driver's license
- Proficient computer skills
- Understanding of safety rules and practices
- Ability to use precision and low precision measuring instruments
- Basic arithmetic and data interpretation skills
- Ability to read schematic drawings
- Personal set of mechanics' tools (if employed)
- Experience with large motor generators, high-voltage circuitry, electronics, or electro-mechanical systems
- Strong communication skills
- Minimum of 4 years verifiable experience as a diesel mechanic or gas automotive/heavy equipment mechanic OR a Journeyman's Mechanic's card
- Must complete an English assessment before interview
Qualifications - Preferred
- Possession of a CDL Class A or B, or ability to obtain during probation
- Associate's degree or higher in electronics, control systems, motors, mechanics, diesel technology, or electrical components
- Completion of formal training in electronics or related fields
- Experience outdoors in various weather conditions
- Experience working near heavy equipment
- Experience with PPE use
- Willingness to work in confined spaces
- Availability for various shifts, overtime, holidays, and weekends
Physical Requirements
- Pass a Physical Ability Test (PAT)
- Normal color vision
- Ability to stand or sit for extended periods
- Lift, carry, push, and pull 50-150 lbs.
- Perform physically demanding tasks
- Frequent walking and manual dexterity
Work Conditions
- At least 21 years old
- Legally authorized to work in the US without sponsorship
- Work at heights of 20 feet or higher
- Work schedule may include various shifts and days off
- Willing to reside and work at designated locations
- Use PPE as required
- Travel extensively (95-100%)
