Job Description

Full-Time. Day shift. Monday - Friday. Under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse, the Assistant Surgical Technician will participate as a peri-op team member by performing various direct and indirect tasks for patients undergoing surgical procedures. They will perform delegated patient care activities. The Assistant Surgical Tech will practice within the guidelines of the Hospital's policies and procedures. Overall, the assistant surgical tech will be responsible for room stocking, patient transportation, assisting with intraoperative patient care as delegated by the Registered Nurse, and facilitating room turnover. The technician must be able to perform assigned support tasks without constant supervision, using initiative and sound judgment based on scientific principles. The AST will also become familiar with the Central Processing Department and support appropriately designed tasks.

Job Requirements

• Ability to follow written and/or verbal instructions effectively
• At least 2 years of hospital experience preferred in a similar field
• High School Diploma or G.E.D required
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills for effective communication with hospital staff, patients, families, and external departments
• Ability to work cooperatively and professionally with nursing staff and physicians
• Complex decision-making skills for planning procedures and solving routine and unexpected problems
• Previous hospital experience required
• Experience in Central Service helpful
• Knowledge of basic patient care required

Constantly: Standing, walking, reaching, twisting, lifting/carrying 0-5 lbs, passing instruments

Frequently: Lifting/carrying 5-25 lbs, pushing/pulling over 100 lbs with help

Occasionally: Sitting with back support, overhead/lateral reaching, stooping, crouching, pushing/pulling >100 lbs with help, operating power tools, exposure to hazards
