  • Training and professional development opportunities
  • Work with mission driven, compassionate colleagues and make a difference every day in the work that you do.

HealthRIGHT360’s Withdrawal Management Unit (WM) is co-located within 815 Buena Vista Avenue West (815) and provides 50 beds to adult men and women for social model WM support, often in the setting of co-occurring behavioral health conditions. The WM Nurse Manager (WMNM) leads a team of approximately 20 licensed and unlicensed personnel in providing clients with Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) and supportive care as part of a larger interdisciplinary team that includes, but is not limited to, SUD counselors and behavioral health professionals. The average length of WM treatment is 7 days but may be extended based on acuity, after which clients that meet medical necessity are eligible to transition into the residential treatment phase of our continuum of care.

Job Summary

The WMNM oversees the direct clinical monitoring of all clients and nursing operations on our fastest-paced unit in San Francisco. They utilize the Nursing Process, Harm Reduction, and Trauma Responsive Care modalities in all actions taken to advocate for and support clients and they model this for their team across units. Supported by the Behavioral Health Directors of Nursing and Medicine, they positively adapt to volatility, uncertainty, change, and ambiguity to develop and lead an agile team in safe service delivery. They are responsible for the recruiting and onboarding of new nurses to the unit, consistently mentoring their team, and evaluating performance, at a minimum, annually. This can include, but is not limited to, the provision of complex MAT interventions, whereby continuous engagement with the clinical best practices of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) must translate into the most current nursing interventions.

The WMNM supports equitable and safe resource planning, for example, by collaborating with the Intake and Integrated Care Center MAT teams, and, especially, with the Behavioral Health Medical Director. By triaging the clinical presentation of clients experiencing SUD and evaluating whether their needs can be appropriately met in a Social Model milieu, they mitigate risk by making recommendations for placement at alternative assessment and diagnostic units, as needed. For those clients who are appropriate for our unit, yet have complex WM needs requiring longer treatment stays, they support collaboration with SFDPH Utilization Management teams in processing extended WM episode requests to capture accurate reimbursement. They will also mindfully plan staff schedules to ensure safe nurse-to-patient ratios and independently implement plans that mitigate unsafe staffing, working with the per diem pool and/or the Talent Acquisition teams, as needed, so that clients are supported by the right amount of care, at the right time.

The WMNM leads a team with fidelity towards HR360’s Strategic Plans. Organizational development initiatives must be prioritized and made comprehensible by the WMNM to their team for successful implementation at a ground level, as well as partnerships with Quality Improvement to operationalize and implement procedures that strengthen WM operations, either internally or in relationships with external stakeholders, and address health disparities. And other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Functions as a nurse within the scope of California RN licensure, and credentialing and privileging of the organization
  • Demonstrates strong nursing knowledge related to drug intoxication, alcohol withdrawal, and mental health needs; has a basic understanding of Buprenorphine induction; and ability to utilize/learn to use suicide assessment tools
  • Demonstrates high motivation to independently learn about, and be accountable for, leading teams whose work will align with organizational policies, procedures, and processes
  • Proactively participates in trainings and/or seeks out support for self-directed learning related to organizational changes/initiatives
  • Independently coordinates and consults with the appropriate department heads within the agency and/or program to facilitate integration between programs
  • Ensures WM documentation compliance with regulatory and funder standards
  • Monitors and bridges gaps of nursing clinical knowledge, e.g., of client’s medication inventory to mitigate risk by ensuring staff are flagging high dose medications and/or potential medication interactions to prescribing provider and/or the Director of Addiction Medicine
  • Triages and/or coordinates complex care needs for all clients accessing healthcare services internal and external to HealthRIGHT360 with WM Medical Case Manager
  • Supports the interpretation of best practice standards and implements them into daily processes
  • Participates in performance and quality improvement duties and assuring organizational readiness for accreditation surveys/audits, with minimal supervision
