Job summary

Eversource Energy is seeking an entry-level wireless telecommunications technician to support planning, installation, testing, and maintenance of wireless systems at multiple sites. You will learn RF principles and perform supervised work on radio, WAN, and data networks.

You will troubleshoot equipment, respond to alarms, and collaborate with engineering and field teams. Travel between MA/CT/NH may be required; on-call and emergency restoration duties are part of the job.

Qualifications

Job description

Role and Scope of Position:

This is an entry level position requiring limited experience responsible for handling assignments in support of Eversource’s wireless telecommunications operations. Handles assignments, under close supervision, associated with planning and performing installation, acceptance testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of wireless telecommunication systems. Provides wireless communication support, guidance, and advice to customers including but not limited to technical services, engineering, information technology, electrical system operations, control centers, dispatch, customer service, field communications, emergency preparedness, as well as emergency response tactical trailers and Mobile Response Center (MRC) vehicles, etc. Participates in various projects to continually improve and upgrade telecommunications infrastructure. Eversource’s wireless communications systems are composed of but not limited to, analog and digital communication systems, dispatch console systems, voice and data radio systems, WAN, and associated peripheral equipment. Technologies including but not limited to radio frequency modulation, antenna systems, radio wave propagation, IP, T1, serial communications, carrier ethernet, phone and satellite communications systems.

Essential Functions:
  • Gain understanding of radio frequency principles and theories for telecommunications systems of varying complexity.
  • Under close supervision, supports the installation, modification, replacement, removal, and maintenance of wireless telecommunications systems, devices, hardware/software/firmware including programing, wiring, configuring settings, and installing updates.
  • Under close supervision, test, analyze, troubleshoot, and repair WANs, coaxial transmission line, RF connectors, transmitters, receivers and uses basic networking essentials for WAN testing and troubleshooting.
  • Capable of performing work on analog and digital radio systems (including but not limited to, DMR, WAN, base stations, mobiles, portables), voice recorders, servers, routers, voice dispatch consoles, etc. Supported protocols include but are not limited to OpenSky, ethernet, IP, T1, MPLS/IP, 4W E&M, serial data, etc.
  • Ability to monitor, modify, review, and respond to alarms related to telecommunications systems.
  • Reads and interprets engineering drawings including but not limited to schematic, wiring, logic, and interconnection diagrams; performs updates to databases and other system records.
  • Provides input to reports, drawings, sketches, logs, and records of work performed; makes corrections to engineering drawings to reflect field changes.
  • Obtains permissions, if required, from appropriate telecommunications customers to perform work on critical operating equipment or electronic systems.
  • Operates a variety of electrical and electronic instruments to test and calibrate, such as power meters, transmission line test sets, spectrum analyzers, voltmeters, amp meters, oscilloscopes, network test sets, frequency counters, communications service monitors, multi-meters, etc.
  • Executes test and maintenance procedures, plans, and scripts in support of wireless telecom systems.
  • Analyze test results, makes recommendations to engineering, operations, and other departments based on wireless characteristics or performance; reports and explains details of wireless performance and issues to other personnel; returns equipment to service following repair.
  • Performs acceptance, installation, or post-installation tests on existing or new installed electronics and wireless equipment.
  • Ability to neatly install and maintain bulk cabling, safe and proper dressing techniques, and apply principles of cable management in data centers, communication sites, cabinets, and vehicles, etc.
  • Maintains awareness of and ensures compliance with safe work practices, engineering standards, regulatory and/or operational requirements.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
  • Must work on-call and during emergency restoration efforts as required.
Technical Knowledge/Skill/Education/Licenses/Certifications:
Technical Knowledge/Skill:
  • Knowledge of electrical and electronic components, circuitry, and systems.
  • Ability to use computer-based technology with various types of operating systems.
  • Skill and manual dexterity in making repairs, adjustments, and modifications to equipment with a working familiarity of testing and measurement techniques.
  • Knowledge of specialized instrumentation use and application, working familiarity with electrical and electronic testing and measurement techniques.
  • Ability to communicate technical information effectively, in both verbal and written form.
  • Knowledge of lock out tag out, switching and tagging procedures.
  • Working knowledge of Eversource safety rules and practices.
Education:
  • Associate degree in one of the following disciplines as described below:
    • Electrical Engineering or Technology
    • Computer Science, Computer Science Engineering or Computer Engineering
    • Computer or Information Technology
  • High school diploma or equivalent with prior related experience as described below.
Experience
  • With associate degree as described above, no prior related experience is required.
  • With high school diploma as described above, five (5) years of related telecommunications system experience, performing engineering, installation, maintenance, or repair in a utility, industry or military field is required.
Licenses & Certifications:
  • Critical Infrastructure Protection certification must be maintained annually.
  • Must maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
Working Conditions:
  • Must be available to work on-call and emergency restoration assignments as required.
  • Lifting of equipment with weights up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be physically able to walk/hike steep or challenging terrain for up to one mile.
  • Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
Mental Aspects:
  • Must be able to work alone, in tight quarters, small rooms, noisy environments, and at remote locations.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Starting pay at Step 1 $39.67 and progressing in accordance with the union contract.
