Job summary

Eversource Energy is seeking an experienced Field Engineer to provide technical support for substation and electric field systems from our Westwood, MA location. The role requires travel across Eastern MA for field support and collaboration with the Operational Compliance group to ensure safety and reliability.

Ideal candidates hold a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical preferred) with 8+ years of related experience and a PE license preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, or Electrical and Computer Engineering strongly preferred.
  • Eight (8) or more years of related experience required.
  • PE license preferred, valid driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide field engineering technical support including network customer work support and equipment testing witnessing and approval.
  • Develop and support training curriculum for Field Engineering and Communications.
  • Engage in component repair, R&D, and analysis of maintenance reports and test results.
  • Lead or assist with technical process reviews (ISO-NE OP-24, PACT) and initiatives for the Field Engineering department.
  • Coordinate with related departments on maintenance, capital improvements, and spares strategy.

Job description

The primary reporting location is Westwood, MA. Will be required to travel throughout Eastern MA for field support.
Essential Functions:
  • Field Engineering Technical Support (Network Customer work support, Equipment Testing Witnessing and approval).
  • Field Engineering and Communication’s Training Curriculum Development support.
  • Component Repair and R&D.
  • Researching outstanding Off-Schedules for work assignment to reduce the backlog.
  • Work with the Union Field Engineer and Power System Technicians on Infrequently-performed work and new work practices, with Safety and Human Performance in mind.
  • Equipment in-service monitor - Settings review through metering (3VO, 3IO, Amps, Voltage, directional MW), CCVT degradation.
  • Lead / Support Technical Process Review (ISO-NE OP-24, PACT) and Technical Initiatives for Field Engineering department.
  • Lead interface with the Operational Compliance group on process development, Compliance process support (TD-718, Archer Assignments) and / or regulatory initiatives affecting EMA Field Engineering and Field Communications.
  • Lead effective interface with related departments ((Substation Technical, P&C Engineering, Station Design Engineering) on unresolved maintenance, identified capital improvement plan, and local Spares strategy.
  • Lead training exercise on outage restoration scenarios.
  • Lead Open EMA Events with Follow-though, driving implementation and closure.
  • Assists and acts as the technical lead responsible for the review of test and commissioning plans, test results, maintenance reports and apparatus analysis reports of substation and electric field systems.
  • Engages test equipment manufacturers for repairs and calibrations. Tracks test equipment, repairs, and calibrations to ensure equipment is ready for use.
  • Identifies common or generic problems with test equipment, and institutes or recommends appropriate corrective action or replacement programs.
  • Tracks and oversees IFC prints for construction and As Built prints received for deployment.
  • Supports supervision with the coordination of technical training activities.
  • Demonstrates efforts to achieve world‑class excellence regarding safe work practices and event‑free performance.
  • Assures compliance with the Eversource safety manual and all company procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable regulatory and operational entities testing requirements and minimum performance requirements.
  • Provides timely and accurate updates, oral and written, for successful completion of assigned work.
  • Keeps Supervision informed regarding status of all on‑going activities assigned.
  • Promotes teamwork among and between all members of the organization.
  • Responds to emergencies and requests for support outside normal work hours.
  • Responsible for and available for On-Call assignments.
  • Assumes the duties of the Supervisor during his/her absence or as assigned.
Qualifications:

Technical Knowledge/Skill:

  • Electrical power engineering level knowledge preferably in the discipline of protection and controls.
  • Ability to continuously develop knowledge of installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of applicable substation and electric field systems assigned to the hiring manager.
  • Ability to continuously develop knowledge and understanding of safety methods, practices, procedures, and policies.
  • Ability to combine theory with practical experience, determines facts, analyze information, make decisions accordingly and resolve problems.
  • Ability to handle technical investigations regarding system events and mis-operations of the electric grid.
  • Strong computer skills and the ability to operate a variety of software programs relating to databases, test equipment, and hardware configuration are required.
  • Ability to develop a working knowledge of switching and tagging procedures.
  • Ability to recommend future direction(s) on test equipment and test processes and procedures based on changing technology.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, or Electrical and Computer Engineering strongly preferred.

Experience:

  • Eight (8) or more years of related experience required.

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid Motor Vehicle Operator License is required.
  • PE license is preferred.
Working Conditions:
  • Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.
  • Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
