Job description

Job Description This role is categorized as hybrid. The selected candidate will be expected to work on-site at the Warren Tech Center at least three days per week, or as otherwise determined by the hiring leader. This role is not eligible for relocation assistance. At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features. Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.

About the Role

We are seeking a proactive, self-starting, results-driven engineer who continuously looks for innovative ways to improve designs and processes, proactively identifies and solves problems, challenges the status quo, and takes full ownership from concept through execution to reliably deliver high-quality results. The Wiper/Washer Design Release Engineer (DRE) in the Exterior Hardware SMT is responsible for the design, development, and integration of wiper and washer systems for Global vehicle programs. This role ensures component and subsystem design, with a strong focus on requirements, DFMEA failure modes, best practices, and seamless integration into the overall vehicle (Body, Electrical, Software, and related interfaces).

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the Program Deployment Team (PDT) and collaborate with our partners: Studio, Design, Purchasing, VDDV, Materials Engineering, Fastening Engineering, Manufacturing, Validation, and our Assembly Plants to optimize designs and ensure alignment
  • Review DFMEAs to ensure wiper/washer failure modes are clearly understood, properly mitigated, and designed into components, subsystems, requirements, and validation plans.
  • Ensure part releases are accurate, complete, and delivered on time to support program milestones and downstream functions.
  • Ensure manufacturing requirements and innovative automation opportunities are identified and incorporated in the design phase to enable robust, efficient, and high-quality production.
  • Lead DFSS projects as needed to improve quality, robustness, and customer satisfaction for wiper/washer subsystems.
  • Support the advanced team and system Architect with early design iterations
  • Support and/or lead issue resolution during supplier sourcing, design, validation, and program launches.
  • Conduct benchmarking to capture data on quality, innovation, cost, mass, and technical correctness; understand North American customer requirements, support field action analysis, enable closed-loop learning, and ensure competitive wiper/washer components and subsystems.
  • Lead the peer review process: conduct deep-dive design reviews with program DREs to ensure all GM executions are technically correct, aligned with BOM strategies, and reflect best practices; identify non-conformances, elevate issues, and drive closure.
Basic Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years of engineering experience; release experience preferred.
  • BS degree in Engineering; Mechanical Engineering preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to lead complex cross-functional teams.
  • Familiarity with system integration into the vehicle environment (Body, Electrical, Software, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead warranty analysis, problem solving, and issue resolution.
