Job summary

The Town of Vail in Colorado is seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator to join our Public Works team year-round, focusing on snowplowing in winter and street and structure maintenance in other seasons.

Responsibilities include operating light to heavy equipment, performing snow removal, and maintaining high safety and guest service standards. The role requires early mornings, occasional overnight shifts, and a willingness to be on call during winter weather events.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of materials, methods, practices, and equipment used in street maintenance.
• Knowledge of practical elements related to street maintenance and traffic control.
• Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
• Basic computer skills and ability to learn other programs.
• Ability to work independently without supervision.
• Ability to analyze situations and adopt effective actions.
• Understanding safety principles and following safety manuals.
• Ability to establish good working relations with staff, contractors, guests and customers.
• Ability to maintain regular attendance, including during weather events or emergencies.
• Ability to pass a federally mandated drug and alcohol test.

Responsibilities

• Operate a variety of heavy equipment and vehicles as needed.
• Perform snowplowing and snow removal during winter.
• Respond to call-ins, early morning and overnight shifts as required.
• Maintain compliance with MUTCD signage and traffic control.
• Collaborate with Public Works across divisions as needed.
