SUMMARY

The Wine & Beer Department Manager creates an outstanding customer experience by sharing expert knowledge of wine and beer, recommending pairings, and maintaining a well-stocked, visually appealing department. This role leads and supports department associates while managing inventory and sourcing new products to ensure an exceptional and diverse selection.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Create and outstanding customer experience through exceptional customer service
  • Give the customer your full attention, greeting all customers in department
  • Respond to special requests from customers in a timely manner
  • Understand why our products are different than conventional stores and be able to explain to customers
  • Taste and evaluate products carried in the department to determine flavor profiles and be able to communicate to our customers
  • Order wine and beer and source new items, while staying current with new items and trends, to keep the department stocked and to provide the best selection for our customers
  • Share knowledge of products with customers, making recommendations for food and wine pairings.
  • Work with team members to ensure the selling floor/aisles are cleared and well maintained
  • Maintain correct department signage and pricing
  • Ensure that all shelves and displays are properly stocked, rotated and front facing
  • Maintain back stock in good order and rotated
  • Help cross-merchandise product with other departments
  • Gain and maintain knowledge of products sold within the store and able to respond to questions and make suggestions about products.
  • Responsible for accurate quarterly inventory.
  • Write schedule to ensure department is properly staffed within budget to provide strong customer service.
  • Supervise, train and coach department members. Educate associates on all products and vendors.
  • Follow and comply with all applicable alcohol handling and service regulations, health and sanitation procedures and adhere to safe work practices.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Certified Sommelier preferred and/or 5 years of work experience and knowledge as Wine Steward. Two years of wine and beer buying experience. Prior department management experience desired.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and government regulations. Ability to effectively present information to and respond to questions from other managers, store managers, vendors & customers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Strong basic math skills including the ability to add, multiply, divide, subtract and calculate percentages

Knowledge of Microsoft Office application including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages and discounts.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to solve practical problems.
