Responsibilities

• Collect eDNA and aquatic macroinvertebrate samples using established protocols.
• Assess field sites for suitability and identify and document replacement sites when necessary.
• Plan and execute efficient sampling schedules within project timelines.
• Filter, store, and ship samples to Tangled Bank Conservation laboratories and partners.
• Collect and record field data accurately and systematically.
• Deploy, maintain, and retrieve camera trap arrays.
• Process aquatic macroinvertebrate samples in a laboratory, including specimen sorting and operation of automated imaging equipment.
• Collaborate closely with another field technician in teams of two.
• Maintain regular communication with project staff regarding progress and field or laboratory issues.
• Assist with additional field, laboratory, and conservation tasks as project needs evolve.

Position Overview

Tangled Bank Conservation is seeking two Wildlife Conservation Technicians based in Asheville, North Carolina, to support multiple concurrent, multi-state conservation initiatives throughout the southern and eastern United States. The position contributes to large-scale biodiversity monitoring efforts using emerging conservation technologies, including environmental DNA (eDNA), aquatic macroinvertebrate sampling, automated imaging, and camera trap surveys.

The initial portion of the position will be heavily field-based, with extensive travel throughout the eastern and southern United States. Field work will be most intensive during September and October, with intermittent travel continuing through November and December. Following the field season, responsibilities will transition toward laboratory-based project support, including macroinvertebrate specimen sorting, operation of automated imaging equipment, and additional data and project support tasks.

Technicians will provide their own vehicle for approved project travel, with mileage reimbursement provided. Lodging expenses associated with required out-of-town project travel will be covered by Tangled Bank Conservation. Training, equipment, sampling locations, and project-specific guidance will be provided before each field deployment.

Requirements

• Reside within commuting distance of Asheville, North Carolina, or be willing to relocate before the start date.
• Have a reliable personal vehicle for extended field travel; larger storage capacity and 4WD/AWD are preferred but not required.
• Demonstrate the ability to independently manage field work, logistics, and scheduling while communicating with project staff.
• Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
• Experience with field work and data collection, particularly aquatic or terrestrial wildlife monitoring.
• Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varied weather conditions.
• Willingness to travel extensively across multiple states, potentially for several weeks at a time, with occasional weekend work.
• Flexibility to adapt to changing schedules and field conditions.
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills, including the ability to work closely with another field technician.
• Ability to accurately record, organize, and report field and laboratory data.
• Basic understanding of GPS and mapping tools.
• Ability to follow written protocols.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with eDNA sampling or aquatic biodiversity monitoring.
• Experience with camera trapping, acoustic monitoring, or other wildlife survey methods.
• Experience processing biological samples or conducting laboratory-based research.
• Familiarity with species and ecosystems of the southeastern United States.

Position Details

• Temporary, full-time employee position for six months beginning in August or September 2026.
• The position may be extended depending on project availability, organizational needs, and performance.
• All sampling gear will be provided.
• Compensation is $2,500–$3,000 per month depending on experience.
• Mileage reimbursement is provided for approved project-related travel using personal vehicles.
• Lodging for required out-of-town field assignments is covered.
• Training, equipment preparation, and project planning will occur at the Asheville headquarters before field deployments.
