Job summary

Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is seeking an Animal Associate for the Prospect Park Zoo to help minimize risks to animals and the public during exhibitions by maintaining safe distances and providing interpretation of the barn area collection.

The role includes supervising animal contact areas during public hours, assisting visitors, preparing diets, and performing humane care and routine maintenance under senior staff guidance.

Qualifications

• Current student or recent grad with biology interest.
• Must be available on weekends and holidays.
• Able to move objects up to 50 pounds.
• Able to work outdoors in varied weather conditions.
• Able to climb, kneel, bend, and navigate uneven terrain.
• Represent WCS professionally with the public and staff.
• Current negative TB test (proof on onboarding).
• Able to safely use tools (drill, wire cutters).
• Basic computer skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide supervision of animal contact areas during public hours to ensure safety.
• Aid the general public and provide information about the Prospect Park Zoo, visitor services, exhibits and the animal collection.
• Prepare animal diets according to established protocols under direction of senior keepers and staff.
• Perform safe, proper, humane care of assigned animals according to protocols under direction of senior keepers and staff.
• Perform safe and proper maintenance of assigned animal exhibits, holding facilities and service areas.
• Enforce the Prospect Park Zoo's visitor rules and regulations.
• Perform other related tasks as instructed by senior animal keepers and supervisory staff.
