Qualifications

  • Answering a multi-line telephone system and processing calls efficiently.
  • Contacting participants to upload documents.
  • Measuring height, weight and hematocrit/hemoglobin.

Job description

JOB TITLE: WIC Technician II/Peer Counselor-Hourly JOB CLASS NUMBER: HRL588 PAY GRADE: H04 FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt BUSINESS UNIT NAME: WIC (Women, Infants and Children) REPORTS TO: WIC Director SUPERVISORY WORK: None STARTING PAY: $17.00 per hour

SUMMARY

Interview’s clients and determines eligibility for program benefits according to categorical, residence, and income criteria. Enters client information into the computer and prints out results to be filed in client's chart. Educates pregnant women about the benefits of breastfeeding; Assists and instructs new mothers about breastfeeding techniques and the use of pumps; Maintains breastfeeding equipment; Updates logs and inventory of breastfeeding supplies; Issue’s food benefits according to diet prescription, obtains necessary signatures, files duplicate copies in an orderly manner. Schedule’s appointments, answers telephone in a polite professional manner and processes calls efficiently. Alphabetically files and pulls charts for clinics, screens immunization records, obtains 24-hout diet recall, weights and measures participants and plots on growth grids, obtains hematocrit/hemoglobin. Backs up computer files on a daily basis, runs daily, weekly, and monthly reports, mails out missed appointment reminders, stocks supplies for clinics as required, and attends staff meetings and required trainings.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Educating pregnant women and their families on the benefits of breastfeeding.
  • Assisting new mothers with the techniques of breastfeeding.
  • Conducting breastfeeding classes in person, via Zoom, and in a variety of community settings.
  • Assisting WIC Nutritionists with breastfeeding consultations for WIC participants.
  • Instructing WIC breastfeeding participants on the use of breast pumps, when necessary.
  • Maintaining logs and inventory of breastfeeding supplies and maintaining breastfeeding equipment.
  • Interviewing clients and determining their income eligibility for enrollment in the WIC program according to standard criteria.
  • Issuing food benefits according to diet prescriptions, obtaining necessary signatures, and filing duplicate copy in an organized manner.
  • Scheduling appointments in a computerized format; follow up on missed and future appointments.
  • Answering a multi-line telephone system and processing calls efficiently and expeditiously.
  • Contacting participants via text and phone to upload documents and assisting them with the process.
  • Obtaining the height, weight and finger stick blood work on clients.
  • Presenting a hospitality, customer centered and caring attitude.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent and a minimum of one year of clerical experience; two years preferred.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License required.
  • IT help desk or similar experience strongly preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to type at a rate of 30 WPM.
  • Ability to work with the public in a high-volume manner.
  • Skill in dealing with contentious clients.
  • Skill in using a personal computer, calculator, copier, television, camera, film projector, and a multi-line telephone system.
  • Knowledge of breastfeeding techniques and expressing breastmilk required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Occasionally will encounter contentious clients. May work in clinics with high noise level or extreme temperature fluctuation. Risk of exposure to communicable diseases.
