Brooks Rehabilitation in Jacksonville, FL is seeking a Wheelchair Technician to perform maintenance, repair, and cleaning of facility-owned wheelchairs and related equipment. Qualifications

Responsibilities

The Wheelchair Technician performs and provides essential maintenance, repair, and cleaning to all facility-owned wheelchairs, powerchairs, shower chairs, and applicable fleet accessories. This role coordinates closely with clinical staff to set up hospital-owned wheelchairs and powerchairs for inpatients based on specific clinical requests. Additionally, the technician manages digital inventory systems to track all hospital fleet components, coordinates ordering replacement parts with the Wheelchair Program Manager, and assists vendors by preparing equipment for trials.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Fleet Maintenance & Repair: Performs routine maintenance, diagnostic evaluations, mechanical/electrical repairs, and comprehensive cleaning/sanitization to facility-owned wheelchairs, shower chairs, and applicable fleet accessories. Maintains and tracks facility-owned charity or loaner wheelchairs.
• Alternative Drive & Seating Configuration: Sets up, configures, and adjusts wheelchairs/powerchairs, specialized seating cushions, and alternative drive hardware for inpatients based on clinical orders and therapist specifications.
• Documentation: Documents adjustments made to the patient’s assigned hospital wheelchair in the medical record based on clinical staff request.
• Inventory Tracking & Asset Management: Actively manages and updates the electronic inventory tracking system of all hospital wheelchair fleet components, seat cushions, wheelchair accessories, and the charity/loaner equipment inventory.
• Procurement & Supply Coordination: Proactively inspects equipment to identify necessary replacement parts and hardware; promptly notifies the Wheelchair Program Manager of any items that require purchasing to prevent fleet downtime.
• Clinical Support: Assists Assistive Technology Professionals (ATPs) and seating therapists by setting up manual and power wheelchairs for recommended inpatient equipment trials.
• Workload Prioritization & Independence: Independently organizes, prioritizes, and follows through on maintenance work orders and technical projects received across multiple facilities.
• Safety & Regulatory Compliance: Adheres to hospital infection control, sanitization, and equipment safety standards, ensuring all equipment operates at peak safety levels.
• Training and Education: Participates in all assigned training programs and educational modules, both in person and online, and applies acquired knowledge to ensure competency with current equipment, policies, and practice standards.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of experience in rehabilitation technology, assistive technology, biomedical equipment maintenance, or a related mechanical/technical field preferred.
• Mandatory Certification Expectation: Attainment of the AMRG (Assistive Mobility Repair Group) Entry level Certification is required within 18 months of hire. All training coursework, study materials, and certification examination fees are 100% employer-sponsored and paid for by Brooks Rehabilitation.
• Technical & Mechanical Knowledge: Working knowledge of manual and power wheelchair mechanical structures, power electronics configuration, maintenance, diagnostics, electronics programming, and specialized seating setup/repair preferred.
• Tool & Shop Proficiency: Demonstrated ability to safely and effectively operate hand tools, power tools, and shop machinery (including table saws, band saws, drill presses, disc/belt sanders, and multi-meters).
• Computer & Systems Literacy: Proficiency in desktop computing and Microsoft 365 (Excel, Word, SharePoint, Teams, Outlook) for inventory tracking, logging maintenance work orders, and general communication.
• Interpersonal & Communication Skills: Exceptional professional verbal, nonverbal, and written communication skills with the ability to foster productive, positive relationships with 25+ department staff members, multidisciplinary clinical teams, patients, and family members.
• Self-Management: Proven organizational skills with the ability to manage assigned technical projects and prioritize fluctuating daily workloads with distant supervision.

• Electrical Systems & Drive Programming: Powerchair circuitry, battery health diagnostics, joystick controllers, power module wiring, and OEM programming parameter adjustments.
• Specialized Alternative Drive Controls: Installation, wiring, sensitivity programming, and mechanical bracket setup for alternative drive interfaces, including head arrays, chin joysticks, switch arrays, and sip-and-puff controls.
• Fleet Asset Management & Infection Control: Preventative maintenance schedules, electronic component traceability, fleet lifecycle management, and hospital-grade sanitization/disinfection protocols.

Hours: Monday - Friday, 7am - 4pm
