Job summary

Anthropic is seeking a State and Local Affairs Lead to engage with Western state governments and advance AI policy in the region. The role reports to the Head of Western State and Local Affairs and involves coordinating with Policy, Communications, and Legal teams, while traveling across the region to manage relationships and regulatory work.

Successful candidates will have a track record in political strategy, with existing relationships in the West and the ability to translate complex AI

Qualifications

• Align with Anthropic’s mission and commit to policy impact
• Experience in state and local government affairs, political strategy, or legislative roles with measurable outcomes
• Existing relationships with Western state leaders (legislators, governors' offices, attorneys general)
• Understand committee processes, legislative/regulatory procedures, and local authority boundaries
• Track record of delivering strategic objectives in government affairs
• Willing to travel regularly across the region

Responsibilities

• Serve as the lead for state and local government affairs across Western states, coordinating with Regional Leads
• Build and maintain relationships with state legislators, governors’ offices, attorneys general, and agency leaders
• Engage with local officials—mayors, city councils, county commissions, economic development boards
• Track and analyze state/local legislation affecting AI and inform company strategy
• Build durable partnerships with chambers of commerce, economic development groups, labor groups, universities
• Represent Anthropic at hearings, events, and public forums, including audiences skeptical of AI
• Collaborate with Communications to develop messaging for regional policy campaigns
• Translate technical positions into regional engagement strategies
• Manage external advisors and registered lobbyists in the region
• Coordinate with policy, communications, legal, and executive teams to align regional activity with company-wide stance
