Job summary

Mt. Morris Middle School is seeking a Wellness Interventionist to support students in the Wellness Room. This in-person role focuses on calming, self-regulation, and coping strategies to help students manage emotions during the school day.

The position emphasizes collaboration with teachers and counselors, maintaining documentation, and ensuring safe transitions back to regular classes. ESSA-aligned practices and positive behavior support are central to daily duties.

Qualifications

  • Must meet ESSA Standards.
  • Experience with behaviorally challenged students.
  • Knowledge of Positive Behavior Support Initiative.
  • Experience with implementation of behavior interventions for small groups and individual students.

Responsibilities

  • Welcome students into the Wellness Room in a calm, respectful, and nonjudgmental manner.
  • Provide a safe, structured environment where students can decompress and practice self-regulation.
  • Help students identify and use coping strategies, such as breathing exercises or sensory tools.
  • Listen and provide emotional support while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Encourage students to develop independence in recognizing emotions and healthy strategies.
  • Monitor room use, ensure time limits and procedures are followed.
  • Help students transition back to class when they are ready to learn.
  • Maintain documentation regarding student visits as required.
  • Communicate concerns to teachers, counselors, administrators, or staff per procedures.
  • Refer situations needing additional support to the appropriate school professional.
  • Maintain student privacy and confidentiality as per policy.

Salary/Compensation: $16.00 per hour (7.5 hours per day)

Work Environment: In-Person

Qualifications:
  1. Must meet ESSA Standards.
  2. Experience with behaviorally challenged students.

Essential Duties:
  • Welcome students into the Wellness Room in a calm, respectful, and nonjudgmental manner.
  • Provide a safe, structured environment where students can decompress and practice self-regulation.
  • Help students identify and use appropriate coping strategies, such as breathing exercises, quiet reflection, sensory tools, or other calming activities.
  • Listen and provide emotional support while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Encourage students to develop independence in recognizing their emotions and choosing healthy strategies to manage them.
  • Monitor student use of the room and ensure established expectations, time limits, and procedures are followed.
  • Help students transition back to class when they are ready to learn.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation regarding student visits, when required.
  • Communicate relevant concerns to teachers, counselors, administrators, or other designated staff according to school procedures.
  • Recognize situations that require additional support and promptly refer concerns involving student safety, significant emotional distress, bullying, or other serious issues to the appropriate school professional.
  • Maintain student privacy and confidentiality in accordance with school policies and applicable requirements.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Mt. Morris Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.
