Job summary

Derby Recreation Commission in Derby, KS seeks part-time Wellness Instructors to educate and facilitate practical wellness classes in nutrition and chronic disease prevention. You will design engaging sessions, foster inclusive discussion, and guide participants through hands-on activities.

Evening, 1–2 classes weekly, 60 minutes each, with scheduling coordinated by the Community Wellness Director. Prior teaching or group facilitation experience and a High School Diploma or GED are required;

  • Collaborates with the Community Wellness Director on formats and activities grounded in adult learning.
  • Adjusts content and facilitation strategies based on feedback and program goals.
  • Communicates schedules and expectations clearly with participants and staff.
  • Maintains professionalism, boundaries, and inclusive practices in all settings.
  • Follows Derby Recreation Commission safety policies and completes attendance/feedback records.
  • Represents Derby Rec positively in instructional and community environments.

Job description

We are seeking part-time Wellness Instructor(s) who are motivated and enthusiastic about supporting community well-being through education, discussion, and practical skill-building. These instructors will serve as content facilitators in one or more of these focus areas:

  • Nutrition (e.g., balanced eating, meal planning, weight management, reducing inflammation, supplements)
  • Chronic Disease Prevention and Management (Lifestyle education to reduce risk or manage conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, or hypertension)

Part-Time Wellness Instructors typically teach 1–2 in-person classes per week, with most classes running 60 minutes in length. Classes may be offered as one-time workshops or as part of a 6 or 8-week series, depending on program goals and community interest. Most classes are scheduled during evening hours. Schedules are flexible and coordinated in collaboration with the Community Wellness Director.

  • Adjusts content and facilitation strategies in response to participant needs, feedback, and program goals.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with participants and staff regarding schedules, expectations, and program details.
  • Maintains professionalism, appropriate boundaries, and inclusive practices in all instructional settings.
  • Follows Derby Recreation Commission policies related to safety, supervision, and program delivery.
  • Completes required documentation, including attendance tracking and participant feedback.
  • Represents the Derby Recreation Commission positively in instructional and community-facing environments.
EDUCATION:

High School Diploma or GED required. College coursework or a degree in a related field (such as health, wellness, education, and public health) preferred. College students are encouraged to apply.

EXPERIENCE:

Experience sufficient to demonstrate practical knowledge and comfort facilitating learning in at least one priority wellness area. Experience may include teaching, training, facilitation, coaching, certifications, or relevant professional roles.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Functions may be performed in indoor and outdoor environments and may include exposure to varying temperatures. Must have the ability to see and hear, sit, stand, stoop, bend, and move about. Must possess an audible speaking voice for instruction and group communication. Ability to lift and move class materials or light equipment as needed.

Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated knowledge, training, or experience in health/nutrition and/or chronic disease prevention and management.
  • Experience facilitating learning, training, or group discussion with adults.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Reliable, organized, and able to manage preparation and follow-through for scheduled classes.
  • Open to feedback and willing to collaborate to strengthen instructional quality.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.
