Job description

Position Summary

Join a passionate team dedicated to transforming lives through health and wellness! At the YMCA of southeastern NC, our Wellness Coaches play a key role in helping members feel empowered, supported, and inspired in their wellness journeys.

As a Wellness Coach, you'll create a welcoming and uplifting environment where individuals of all fitness levels can thrive. You'll provide expert guidance on healthy living, offer encouragement, and ensure a safe, enjoyable experience every step of the way. More than just fitness, you’ll build meaningful connections and foster a sense of belonging in our YMCA community.

Essential Functions
  1. Relationship building activities: Create a welcoming environment; greet members and prospective members; connect members of similar interests; respond to member questions; and thank members for allowing us to serve them.
  2. Monitor wellness areas, including locker room; provide orientations and assist members with workouts; check in members for classes.
  3. Create a nurturing and safe environment by reporting suspicious activity that may lead to child abuse or may violate the code of conduct.
  4. Keep supplies organized, maintain and clean facility and care for equipment; maintain cleanliness of all selectorized and free weight equipment; responsible for the care, returning, and storage of all equipment; fill all wipe and hand sanitizer stations in fitness center when needed; record all maintenance duties to Maintenance Director and HL Director/Supervisor; clean, vacuum all areas in the fitness/weight rooms and classroom studios.
  5. Engage in positive public relations with members; maintain an air of professionalism at all times.
  6. Wear appropriate dress including closed‑toed shoes, no hats, and nametag while on duty.
  7. Know all emergency procedures and be able to administer CPR/AED and first aid; follow YMCA policies and procedures; respond to emergency situations.
  8. Supervise and control occupancy and traffic flow on all equipment.
  9. Check on all wellness orientations, confirm and reschedule when needed; give follow‑up calls when needed to those missed appointments and verify dates and times.
  10. Be a team player and attend staff meetings and trainings, as required.
  11. Maintain open communications with supervisor.
  12. Assist in maintaining equipment and informing Director of any breakage or items needing replacement.

Qualifications
  • Must be 18 years of age. GED preferred.
  • Required certifications: CPR, First Aid, AED.
  • Ability to work independently and in a group setting.
  • Basic knowledge of computers.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • At least one year of experience coaching preferred.
Physical Demands
  1. Ability to demonstrate various cardio and strength equipment.
  2. Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position; walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting a minimum 45 lbs.
YMCA Safety Requirements
  • CPR & First Aid: Must be able to complete and maintain certification in CPR and First Aid; able to assist individuals in need until professional help arrives.
  • Emergency Response: Ability to quickly identify emergency situations (medical, fire, environmental, etc.) and respond appropriately following established procedures.
  • Incident Management: Required to report all safety incidents and hazards immediately and accurately to supervisors.
  • Safe Environment: Commitment to maintaining a safe, clean, and hazard‑free environment for all staff, members, and participants.
  • Physical Readiness: Must be able to perform physical tasks related to safety, including assisting individuals of various ages and physical abilities.
  • Compliance: Follow all YMCA safety protocols, OSHA standards, and state/local regulations as applicable.
