Job summary

Hamilton College's Wellin Museum seeks a part-time on-call Security Officer to provide safety, security, and guest services during museum hours. You will monitor exhibits, perform rounds, verify access, and assist visitors with directions while maintaining a welcoming environment.

The role requires a high school diploma and CPR/First Aid certification, plus the ability to obtain a New York State Security Guard License.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have or be able to obtain CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a New York State Security Guard License.

Responsibilities

  • Security and protection of museum property, exhibits, classrooms and assets.
  • Conduct hourly rounds to ensure visitor and property safety.
  • Open/close of public and non-public areas and building rounds.
  • Perform identification checks and clearance of guests.
  • Ensure safety of all persons on museum property.
  • Maintain records reflecting the physical condition of museum property as it applies to safety and security issues.
  • Respond to emergency calls and may perform CPR or First Aid in emergency situations.
  • Act as an Evacuation Monitor during emergency situations.
  • Escort approved visitors through non-public areas and may monitor individuals working in art storage rooms.
  • Inspects parcels.
  • Maintains a daily log and drafts incident reports as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Description:
Position Summary

Reporting to the Wellin Museum Safety Manager, this position provides safety, security and guest services in public and non-public areas as assigned during normal museum operating hours. With the exception of federal/state mandated benefits, this position is non-benefited part-time/on-call (total work hours are limited to under 910 per year) and may include evenings and weekends. Whether you are looking for a few hours a week or the flexibility of an on-call schedule, this position offers a unique way to engage with the college community.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for security and protection of museum property, exhibits, classrooms and assets. (30%)

  • Conduct hourly rounds to ensure visitor and property safety. When conducting rounds, checks exhibitions, art storage rooms, mechanical rooms, stairwells, fire exits, fire extinguishers and pull boxes. Documents issues in log book and advises supervisor on duty of any concerns. (15%)

  • Responsible for building security, door security, opening and closing of public and non-public areas and building rounds. (10%)

  • Performs identification checks and clearance of guests entering the museum. (5%)

  • Ensures safety of all persons on museum property. (10%)

  • Maintains records reflecting the physical condition of museum property as it applies to safety and security issues. (10%)

  • Responsible for response to emergency calls and may perform CPR or First Aid in emergency situations. (2%)

  • Acts as an Evacuation Monitor during emergency situations. (2%)

  • Escorts approved visitors through non-public areas and may monitor individuals working in art storage rooms. (5%)

Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Must have or be able to obtain CPR and First Aid certification

  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a New York State Security Guard License

  • Ability to perform basic computer application skills

Physical Demands:

Employees in this position are frequently required to:

  • Stand/Sit for up to 6 hours per shift, depending on post requirement

  • Patrol the floor and Exhibition Gallery

  • Conduct hourly building sweeps

  • Vocally communicate with employees and members of the public

  • Utilize stairways during emergency response situations when elevator disabled.

  • Move an individual to safety with the assistance of another officer.

  • Assist individual(s) with mobility impairments to safety with assistance of another officer.

Compensation Range:

$17.50 per hour
