Job Description

BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair (BAE NSR) is seeking to hire a Welding Engineer for our Norfolk, VA, waterfront facility. The candidate will report directly to the Engineering Manager in our Engineering Department and will also interact with other program management team members (Area Managers, Project Managers, Program Managers, Craft Managers, Craft Supervisors, all Shops), government, and commercial customers.

Responsibilities:

  1. Ability to research and develop US Navy / ABS welding procedure specifications (WPS); conduct procedure qualifications and develop WPS data sheets in accordance with defined requirements.
  2. Provide engineering and technical support for welding operations in the fabrication/manufacture/restoration for both shipboard repairs and land based modular construction.
  3. Research and recommend weld equipment and processes, identifying limitations and production capabilities.
  4. Review project specifications for welding process, base metals, filler metals, heat treatment, and NDT requirements; select appropriate WPS, and if required, qualify a new WPS and associated data.
  5. Interact with Structural and Welding Shop supervisory personnel, Quality Dept., welders, suppliers, and 3rd party NDT personnel to review and ensure procedures are in compliance with customer requirements and applicable welding standards and specifications.
  6. Review current welding processes and create action plans to prevent the occurrence of non-conformities relating to product, process, and quality.
  7. Assist with observation, assessment, training, and certification of welders. Provide insight regarding potential improvements in process, techniques, and training to maximize production and minimize rework.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills

Required Education/Certifications:

  1. Bachelor's Degree in Welding Engineering required.
  2. American Welding Society CWI/CWE and ASNT NDT Level II certifications desired.

Required Experience:

  1. Minimum 4-5 years welding engineering related experience in a maritime construction, fabrication, or repair facility is required.
  2. Thorough knowledge and experience with weld inspection, related NDT (MIL-STD-271) methods (MT, PT, UT, and RT), destructive testing methods is required, and Materials Science.

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  1. Understand the hazards associated with welding processes to ensure proper application of safety procedures and/or devices.
  2. Ability to read and interpret structural drawings and fabrication details.
  3. Ability to interface effectively with customers in the resolution of production concerns or other issues related to quality, cost, and schedule.
  4. Ability to prepare concise technical reports summarizing key findings and identifying next steps; must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) along with Adobe PDF manipulation and creation.
  5. Ability to work in a team-oriented environment to meet internal and external customer requirements and expectations; problem solving and analytical skills required.
  6. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills

  1. Familiarity with structural fabrication and welded joint design standards (MIL-STD-1689 and MIL-STD-22D), and quality assurance requirements for welding 5XXX series aluminum (DM-10-623B) is desired.

Pay Information

Full-Time Salary Range: $57,866 - $98,372

Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
