Job summary

Magna International in Birmingham, AL is seeking a Welding Engineer to own welding processes for new and existing programs. You will ensure compliance with customer specs, drive process improvements, and manage weld documentation while supporting safety and Magna principles.

The role requires 4+ years in weld engineering in a manufacturing setting, with strong costing/quoting skills and willingness to travel.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Bachelor's in Weld Engineering preferred or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in welding engineering within a manufacturing environment, automotive preferred.
  • Strong costing and quoting capabilities and hands-on tooling knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure welding on new and existing programs meets customer weld specs and communicate non-conformances.
  • Follow plant safety rules; promote Magna’s principles and employee charter.
  • Provide direction on equipment and weld applications during process development.
  • Maintain weld documentation and data bases; support process optimization and line throughput.
  • Collaborate with maintenance and cross-divisions to share best practices and improvements.

Through our robust product engineering, outstanding tooling capabilities and diverse process expertise, we continue to bring lightweight and innovative products to market.Job Responsibilities:Responsible for ensuring all welding on both new and existing programs is compliant with customer weld specifications as noted on customer prints and / or Target agreements and is required to alert leadership of all non-conformances.Follow and enforce all plant safety rules and policies. Understand and promote Magna’s philosophies (Magna Operational Principles, Corporate Constitution and Employee’s Charter). Communicate and make presentations related to welding in front of the customer Assume full ownership for all welding processes including, but not limited to:Quality concerns driven to successful resolution in a timely manner Lessons learned are cascaded across all similar processesProcess optimization to drive continuous improvementUpkeep of weld documentation data base and weld mapsEvaluate weld documentation to ensure compliance with all customer specifications .Provide direction on required equipment and application of welds during process development to optimize line throughput while still maintaining customer weld specifications Stay abreast of improvements in technology in an effort to keep KAMTEK at the forefront of welding and implement all felt to be beneficial to the division Participate in welding best practices meetings with other divisions to share and learn latest weld strategies Support quoting activities for new and existing business Collaborate with Maintenance Supervisor to provide technical direction to Weld Technicians. Promotes good housekeeping (5S) Perform other duties as requiredSKILL (Ability to do the job)-Ability to work in a team environment-Must have good interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills (verbal and written)-Capable of developing good working relationships with customers-Must be willing to work extended or flexible hours as required (including shift change to support business needs)-Able to work under variable workload and stress-Must be willing to travel & have a valid passport (or ability to get a passport)-Must have practical experience in costing and quoting-Ability to offer alternatives to existing designs resulting in improved means of manufacturingSome of the physical demands for this position include the ability to lift 40 pounds, the ability to stand and sit for prolonged periods of time, and occasional bending and stooping.EQUIPMENT / TOOLS USEDSome of the equipment and tools used are a computer, telephone, copier/printer, fax machine,all standard weld lab test equipment, teach pendant, force gauge, weld analyzer, and other related test equipmentKNOWLEDGEEDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s Degree in Weld Engineering preferred, or equivalent experienceTECHNICAL TRAINING: Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerance, CAD and CAD Viewer programs; Bosch Resistance Welding Controls, Lincoln i400 Power Source, Fronius Power Source, Thorough knowledge of GMAW, FCAW, RSW.OTHER: Computer skills; proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Outlook, Bosch BOS, weld controller software and data collectionWORK EXPERIENCEWeld Engineering experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably automotiveHOW MUCH?
